With just weeks until a December 20 spending deadline, negotiators in the House and Senate are trying to find a path forward on yet another short-term spending bill to run into next year — a move that will force incoming President Donald Trump to contend with a funding battle in his first months of his presidency and smack dab in the middle of what is expected to be a contentious confirmation season. The length of that bill as well as what else is included in it is still an active discussion, sources tell CNN. Doing so would help protect the speaker from a right flank that loathes an end-of-year mega spending bill, known as an omnibus. For now, negotiators are trying to nail down an agreement on what else will be included in the package. A top target: A disaster aid package to help areas ravaged by hurricanes this fall — and how big that package will be remains an active discussion.

Donald Trump could use Joe Biden’s pardon of Hunter Biden for his own gain, some worry. Hunter Biden pardon gives Trump political coverPresident Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son Hunter Biden was a move by a father to protect his son that some lawmakers said they could understand. “I’ll put it this way — if it was my son, I’d pardon him too,” Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville said. What hasn’t resonated as widely is Biden’s stated reason for pardoning Hunter Biden. Yesterday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended Biden, telling reporters he believes “Hunter was singled out.

WASHINGTON — As Congress returns this week for one last burst of activity before it wraps up the session, it faces a key deadline of Dec. 20 to avert a government shutdown. “We’ve got to do a lot of things at the same time,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., said of the first 100 days of Trump’s second term. “We’re going to be walking and chewing gum.”Some Republicans would have preferred not to get bogged down with a funding deadline early in the new Trump presidency. Rep. Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, which writes funding bills, said there's little time. “Once they decide what they’re going to do — if they’re going to try to get any of these appropriation bills done before or whether they’re going to do a CR for all of them until March — I mean, that’s the real debate.

“In the law, there is a clear separation of church and state,” Childs, an attorney who represents the Houston area on the board, said of her decision. This year, Oklahoma’s top education official began ordering public schools with students in grades five through 12 to incorporate the Bible into lesson plans. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters, a Republican, has purchased 500 Bibles and asked for $3 million from the state to buy copies for every classroom. “Public school is not Sunday school,” Wright said. Childs, the Texas State Board of Education member, sees the current push for increased religious influence in public schools as concerning, as it comes amid a dialing back of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at companies and institutions.

Republicans are headed into 2025 in control of the presidency, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. But there's still one outstanding House race yet to be called. Gray has 105,083 votes, compared to 104,856 votes for Duarte, according to the California Secretary of State's office. The race is a rematch of their 2022 contest, which saw Duarte ultimately defeat Gray by 564 votes out of nearly 134,000 ballots cast. Due to the number of competitive US House races in California, a state with over 22 million registered voters, control of the chamber can theoretically rest on the Golden State alone.

5 big questions about how tech will look under Trump
  + stars: | 2024-11-29 | by ( Clare Duffy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
He sought to swat down legal protections for tech platforms. Many Republicans are eager to see the Trump administration address what they see as “censorship” of right-leaning voices by many mainstream social media platforms. That could mean reforming or reinterpreting Section 230, which shields tech platforms from liability for their users’ posts and allows the platforms to moderate content as they see fit. In essence, Carr could attempt to pass a rule that would make it possible to sue tech platforms under that new interpretation. Ultimately, that could mean hamstringing tech companies’ efforts to reduce hateful or false content on their platforms.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will visit Capitol Hill to discuss government reform with Republican congressional leaders Dec. 5, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., announced Wednesday. Johnson said the entrepreneurs will "discuss major reform ideas to achieve regulatory rescissions, administrative reductions, and cost savings" with GOP lawmakers. President-elect Donald Trump has named Musk and Ramaswamy co-chairs of a new outside advisory commission they have dubbed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Next week's planned meeting is the latest indication that Republican leaders in Congress are taking Musk and Ramaswamy seriously. Yet even the best efforts of Republican leaders in Congress may not be enough to enact many of these ideas.

CNN —The Pentagon is unlikely to use all of the billions of dollars authorized by Congress to arm Ukraine before President Joe Biden leaves office, according to two US officials and three defense officials. For months, the US has run into the limits of its ability to replenish its own weapons inventories, which limited what the Biden administration has been able to send Ukraine. In September, Biden committed billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine as President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House. The US announced a $1 billion military aid package for Ukraine that same day. But the value of aid packages quickly dipped, as the stockpiles of weapons and equipment the Pentagon was able to send Kyiv dwindled.

Back in 2006 in Italy, newly elected Vladimir Luxuria was briefly barred from using the ladies' room when she took her seat in Parliament. "What is happening to Sarah McBride is rank politics." "So I am very sympathetic to Sarah McBride." During her four years in the Polish Parliament, Grodzka also faced verbal attacks and was repeatedly misgendered by fellow Polish lawmaker Krystyna Pawlowicz. In recent years — nearly a decade after she left Parliament — Grodzka is still occasionally on the receiving end of personal attacks from Polish lawmakers, as the country's right-wing has embraced anti-LGBTQ sentiments.

MANILA, the Philippines — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed Monday to fight back against what he called reckless and troubling threats against him, speaking out after his estranged vice president said he would be assassinated if she herself were killed. “If planning the assassination of the president is that easy, how much more for ordinary citizens?” he said. Sara Duterte told reporters she had yet to hear the president’s statement but she recalled the 1983 assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino, for which she blamed the Marcos family, without giving proof. “The whole nation fought back when their family killed Benigno Aquino Jr.,” Duterte told reporters. Rodrigo Duterte told the hearings that he was solely responsible for the bloody crackdown and has urged the ICC to “hurry up” with its investigation.

After announcing he would not return to Congress, Matt Gaetz appears to be trying out a new career option: creating personalized videos for his fans on Cameo. Gaetz, a former Florida representative, joined the platform Friday, a day after he withdrew his name from consideration to serve as President-elect Donald Trump’s attorney general amid sexual misconduct allegations. There, he’s been doling out paid holiday wishes, marriage congratulations and career pep talks. “Trump nominated me to be US Attorney General (that didn’t work out). “Look, I know your politics and mine may not align specifically, but you know, our career trajectories might not be either.

Just a month after describing herself as “pro-transgender rights” and supporting children exploring their identities, Mace spoke out against transgender women competing in women’s sports. In texts with CNN, Mace reiterated her past support for LGBTQ rights, including voting for same-sex marriage. Mace, however, also described transgender individuals as needing to “seek help.”“Voted for gay marriage twice. “I strongly support LGBTQ rights and equality,” she said at the time.

Chipmaker Intel and the CHIPS Act Office are close to finalizing a deal which would award the company a roughly $8 billion grant, according to a person familiar with the matter, as the Biden administration moves to dole out funds before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration. The U.S. awarded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. a $6.6 billion grant earlier this month, raising investor expectations that cash funding for Intel would come soon. Intel has benefited from CHIPS Act tax breaks but has not yet received cash awards, something which Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has expressed dissatisfaction with. "We're frustrated that hasn't moved faster," Gelsinger told CNBC in October, referring to the CHIPS Act grants. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously said he might look to repeal the bipartisan CHIPS Act, but he then walked back those comments.

[END TAPE]KRISTEN WELKER:According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump plans to fire the team that worked with the special counsel. So, I think President Trump is picking reformers for these Cabinet positions. After the midterms Joe Biden said that there was no way President Trump would ever be back in the White House. He's going to sign some executive actions, but he's also going to then begin to roll out this plan. I also think he's going to face some skepticism by Republicans on using the military, for instance, going kind of into different states.

A prominent digital rights activist, who is transgender, confronted Rep. Nancy Mace at a public event Thursday, days after the congresswoman from South Carolina introduced a resolution to ban transgender women from using women’s bathrooms in the U.S. Capitol. A representative for Mace and Project Liberty, the organization that hosted the summit and invited Greer, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Greer’s organization is known for its viral protest efforts against internet censorship and surveillance and in support of net neutrality. McBride, whom Mace has repeatedly misgendered, said in a statement that she would follow the new bathroom rules as outlined by Johnson, even if she disagrees with them.
