“It will not work.”The officials said the briefings occurred in the fall. The FBI commonly provides defensive briefings to senior officials when the bureau learns they have been targeted by foreign intelligence operations. Several members of the House Intelligence Committee and select House committee on the CCP declined to comment when asked if they had received a classified briefing on the matter. U.S. intelligence officials and analysts say China’s efforts to stoke polarization and undercut Americans’ confidence in the democratic process are part of a long-term effort that includes global information operations designed to tarnish America’s image abroad. A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington responded to that allegation this month by saying: “China firmly opposes the US’s smear attacks against China without any factual basis.”

“If she wins, it’s the end of seniority,” said a House Democrat who has served decades in Congress. Some powerful committee leaders have already stepped aside amid challenges from relatively younger upstarts. President-elect Donald Trump’s wide-ranging interview with “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker that aired Sunday touched on just about every major policy he has proposed for his second term, including imposing new tariffs, tackling inflation and mass deportations. “They deleted and destroyed all evidence of — that they found.”In the interview, Welker pointed out that Democrats deny this. According to Thompson, those agencies, and another House committee, continue to have access to the files and information the Republicans have argued was deleted, since the House committee didn’t archive them pending White House and DHS review. Tariffs, jobs and inflationTrump misconstrued the potential economic realities of tariffs, the taxes charged to importers on goods coming into the U.S. from abroad. Biden’s senior aides inside the White House have been deliberating for weeks about the possibility of issuing preemptive pardons, according to the sources familiar with the discussions. One former senior White House official said aides inside the White House and across various federal agencies are intensely worried about the possibility that the incoming Trump administration will prosecute anyone deemed as having antagonized the president-elect. “Why not do it?”A White House spokesperson declined to comment. The former White House official who spoke to CNN, who is intimately familiar with the workings of the White House counsel’s office, said it would be typical for Siskel and his team to first put together a detailed memo to be presented to Biden. “It’s just such a different use of the pardon power,” said Neil Eggleston, former White House counsel to President Barack Obama.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Peter Navarro will serve as “Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing” in his next White House term. Navarro, 75, will be tasked with helping to “successfully advance and communicate the Trump Manufacturing, Tariff, and Trade Agendas,” Trump wrote in a pair of Truth Social posts revealing the pick. He served a roughly four-month sentence in a federal facility in Miami for defying a congressional subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Who is Kash Patel, Trump’s pick for FBI director?

CNN —Kash Patel, Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI and an ardent supporter of the president-elect, has vowed to help dismantle the same organization he’s poised to lead. The FBI director must also be confirmed by the Senate, where members are already bracing for how they’ll navigate a slew of unorthodox Trump selections. As of late last week, some close to Trump believed it was a “toss-up” between Patel and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey as to whom the president-elect would pick for FBI director, according to a source familiar with the discussions. Trump briefly floated Patel as a potential replacement for then-CIA Director Gina Haspel, whom he had considered firing after the 2020 election. Matt Gaetz said Thursday he is withdrawing his name from consideration as President-elect Donald Trump's pick for U.S. attorney general, ending the controversial bid that put prior allegations of sexual misconduct in the spotlight. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback - and the incredible support of so many," Gaetz said in a statement posted on his X account. "There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General," he said. The Department of Justice's investigation into whether Gatez sex-trafficked a minor girl ended last year without charges being filed. The House Ethics Committee probe into Gaetz, initially launched in 2021, ran into several obstacles, including a lack of access to records collected by a federal criminal investigation into Gaetz. In addition to the House Ethics Committee investigation, Gaetz was separately investigated by the US Justice Department for alleged sex trafficking, obstruction of justice and other potential crimes, but prosecutors declined to bring any charges. The House committee abandoned plans for a closed-door meeting Friday, when lawmakers were expected to consider the release of the report. When asked about the friend’s claim she had sex with Gaetz, Dorworth suggested in the deposition that both women made up their stories. The Texas Supreme Court has ruled against lawmakers who used their subpoena power to halt the execution of a death row inmate for his daughter’s “shaken baby” death, paving the way for it to proceed. "Categorically prioritizing a legislative subpoena over a scheduled execution, in other words, would become a potent legal tool that could be wielded not just to obtain necessary testimony but to forestall an execution," the Texas Supreme Court said in its ruling Friday. But the Office of the Attorney General quickly appealed the subpoena, which was supported by a district court judge's temporary injunction that halted Roberson's execution. After the state's highest criminal court agreed with the attorney general's office, allowing Roberson's execution to continue, lawmakers then petitioned their case to the Texas Supreme Court. "Given the overwhelming new evidence of innocence, we ask the State of Texas to refrain from setting a new execution date."
