But other changes, like getting rid of deductibles altogether or even instituting universal health care, feel impractical, if not impossible.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti CNN —Security forces protecting Haiti’s leader provided covering fire as he left a hospital in Port-au-Prince after an interview with CNN, in a stark illustration of the violence that continues to plague the gang-ravaged nation. Among people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, researchers recognize familial forms of the disease and sporadic cases. This shifting appreciation of inherited risk, researchers say, is due to a better understanding of the role of a fourth gene that carries the blueprints to make a lipid-carrying protein called apolipoprotein E, known as APOE. One known as APOE2 is thought to be protective against the development of Alzheimer’s disease. They also compared people with two copies of APOE4 to people with other inherited forms of the disease — early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer’s disease (ADAD) and Down syndrome-associated Alzheimer’s disease (DSAD). Gene testing isn’t currently recommendedIt is also likely to change how people who carry the APOE4 gene are diagnosed and treated.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's government criticized senior doctors at a major hospital for threatening to resign in support of the weekslong walkouts by thousands of medical interns and residents that have disrupted hospital operations. But in some major hospitals like the Seoul National University Hospital, they account for about 30%-40% of the total doctors, assisting senior doctors during surgeries and dealing with inpatients while training. Their walkouts have subsequently caused numerous canceled surgeries and other treatments at their hospitals and burdened South Korea’s medical service. But doctors say newly recruited students would also try to work in the capital region and in high-paying fields like plastic surgery and dermatology. Critics say doctors — one of the best-paid professions in South Korea — are only worrying about the possibility of a lower income in the future.

That added to the massive debt burdens already placed on the hospitals by their for-profit owners, deepening their financial woes. In January, MPT reported that its biggest tenant, a nationwide chain of 32 hospitals called Steward, could no longer pay its rent. The core idea was simple: to buy hospital real estate, pocket the lease payments, and use the money to reward investors. The more hospital real estate that MPT buys, the more money it makes in rent payments from the hospitals. But that doesn't mean that MPT's leaders didn't get rich off its hospital deals.

The body of a person killed early Thursday as Israeli forces opened fire toward crowds thronging an aid convoy in Gaza City. Most of the deaths were caused by trampling in a stampede, Admiral Hagari said, and some people were hit by aid trucks. On Wednesday, he had heard that people had received bags of flour from aid trucks, and there were rumors that another convoy was coming. The Israeli military did not respond to questions about whether Israeli tanks opened fire before or after the aid trucks arrived. Mr. Al-Sholi described chaos as ran from the aid trucks and people around him were hit.

CNN —Doctors and medical officials in southern Gaza say Israeli snipers have shot dead a number of people as they tried to leave the Nasser Medical Complex in recent days. A trauma surgeon at the hospital told CNN he saw at least two people killed by snipers on Tuesday, with more shot and injured. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza also said Israeli sniper fire had killed civilians on Tuesday and said a further seven people were shot dead by Israeli snipers on Monday. Early in the war, the Israeli military designated Khan Younis as a safer zone and told residents from northern Gaza to seek shelter there. “The situation is catastrophic and very disturbing in the Nasser Medical Complex, and there is a state of panic among those present there,” he said.

A Simple Way to Save Premature Babies
  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( Roni Caryn Rabin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
Preterm babies are those born before 37 weeks of gestation. In preterm infants, delayed clamping leads to improved circulation, less need for blood transfusions and a lower incidence of serious complications, such as necrotizing enterocolitis, or inflammation of the digestive tract. Worldwide, some 13 million premature babies are born every year, and almost a million of them die within a month of birth. A low-cost, low-tech intervention like delayed cord clamping has the potential to save many lives. Many preterm babies in the United States are born by cesarean section and require resuscitation.

REUTERS/Doaa Rouqa Acquire Licensing RightsABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, Nov 14 (Reuters) - The White House on Tuesday said it had its own intelligence that Hamas was using Gaza's largest hospital Al Shifa to run its military operations, and probably to store weapons, saying those actions constituted a war crime. He said those groups were also prepared to respond to Israeli military operations against that facility. Israeli forces have surrounded Gaza City's Al Shifa hospital, the biggest in the enclave, which they say sits atop an underground headquarters of Hamas militants. Israeli Forces Reached Gaza’s Main Hospital

Israeli forces advanced today to the gates of Gaza’s largest hospital, where doctors describe a dire situation: Fuel, medicine and food are running out for hundreds of patients and thousands of others sheltering. Dozens of corpses are decomposing at the hospital, known as Al-Shifa, because there is no way to preserve or remove them, a chief nurse said. Israeli and American officials say Hamas uses hospitals in Gaza, including Al-Shifa, as shields for its fighters and says that militants have built a vast command complex under the hospital. Hamas and doctors at the hospital deny the existence of such a command center. Israeli troops have reached at least two other hospitals in northern Gaza, stepping up their push to empty the facilities, according to Israeli military officials, as fighting around them intensifies.
