A Ukrainian infantryman walks along a trench in the mud after the rain on Nov. 9, 2023, in an area the military calls the "Horlivka front," an urban-type settlement in Toretsk urban hromada, Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said Friday that the Russian military "does not stop trying to surround" the shattered eastern stronghold of Avdiivka. The industrial hub of Avdiivka, which is regarded as the gateway to Donetsk, has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance. The update from Ukraine's General Staff reported a series of Russian assaults in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions over the last 24 hours. Elswhere, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, chief of the General Staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov and other key figures at the southern military grouping's headquarters to discuss the Ukraine war.

Ukrainian strikes on the eastern Donetsk region left six people dead and another nine wounded Saturday, said Denis Pushilin, the Russia-backed head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic. Ukrainian forces shelled the cities of Donetsk, Svitlodarsk and Horlivka, Pushilin said on Telegram. Several houses and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged during the strikes, Pushilin added. Remember: The Donetsk People's Republic is a self-declared, Russian-backed separatist region in eastern Ukraine, where fighting has raged since 2014. This post has been updated to include the latest death and injury toll reported by Russia-backed authorities in Donetsk.

An elderly Ukrainian woman recounted her experiences fleeing Russian invaders twice before she died. Kateryna Lihusha told The Wall Street Journal that she first fled home as a baby in 1932. Before she died, Lihusha was among the millions of Ukrainians who were displaced by the war and are now scattered throughout Europe and beyond. The first time Lihusha fled Russian invaders was as a baby in her mother's arms in 1932, the Journal reported. Lihusha died a year later of kidney disease.

TORUN, Poland—The first time that Kateryna Lihusha fled a murderous Kremlin effort to tighten its grip on Ukraine, it was 1932 and she was a baby in her mother’s arms. Her parents ran to the eastern Ukrainian city of Horlivka from a nearby village where Soviet security officials were seizing grain. Many of her relatives who stayed would die of hunger.

The War’s Violent Next Stage

For much of the winter, the war in Ukraine settled into a slow-moving but exceedingly violent fight along a jagged 600-mile-long frontline in the southeast. Now, both Ukraine and Russia are poised to go on the offensive. They are looking for vulnerabilities, hoping to exploit gaps, and setting the stage for what Ukraine warns could be Moscow’s most ambitious campaign since the start of the war. Ukraine must now defend against the Russian assault without exhausting the resources it needs to mount an offensive of its own. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has given an order to take all of the Donbas region by March, Ukrainian intelligence says.
Pro-Russian official Denis Pushilin, the acting head of the separatist "Donetsk People's Republic" in eastern Ukraine, has claimed that Russian forces in the region — arguably the most hotly-contested region in the Ukraine war at the moment — could soon be in a position to advance and capture Bakhmut. Denis Pushilin (C), leader of the separatists in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR) arrives to deliver a press conference in Donetsk, on April 11, 2022. Fighting in Donetsk has descended into bloody trench warfare in recent months with fierce battles over every mile of territory and settlement surrounding Bakhmut. The General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces said Wednesday morning that Russian forces continued to focus their efforts on "conducting offensive operations" in the area around Bakhmut. It's not the first time that Pushilin has claimed that Bakhmut is close to encirclement, having said the same thing last week.
