Colleen Hoover’s book “It Ends With Us” has been a fixture on the best-seller list for years. And now, the movie adaptation has become a smash at the box office. The $25 million film from Sony Pictures is on track to earn at least $45 million in the United States and Canada, box office analysts say. Starring Blake Lively, the romance is based on Ms. Hoover’s most popular book — one that was initially released in 2016 but reappeared on the best-seller list in the midst of the pandemic in 2021 and has since spent some 140 weeks there. Buoyed by TikTok, the book, about a complicated love triangle with undertones of domestic violence, has sold 8 million copies and found fans worldwide.

A man arrested in May after he was accused of fatally punching a 67-year-old driver in a road rage incident has now been charged in the murder of a beloved Detroit neurosurgeon found dead in his home last year. Desmond Burks, 34, was charged this week with first-degree murder, felony murder, larceny and other crimes in the April 2023 shooting of Dr. Devon Hoover. The murder rocked the community, and many people including former patients, family members and friends expressed their shock and grief. A Facebook page titled “Justice for Dr. Devon Hoover” was inundated with memories of the doctor. When authorities charged Burks in Hoover’s death, he had already been in jail on a second-degree murder charge in the death of Reda Saleh.

Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel-turned-film adaptation “It Ends With Us” is stirring controversy ahead of its opening weekend, with online sleuths speculating over alleged behind-the-scenes drama between cast members. Baldoni optioned the film in 2019 with Wayfarer Studios, and later signed on to direct and star in it. Representatives for Baldoni, Lively and Hoover did not immediately respond to requests for comment. “The iconic rooftop scene, my husband actually wrote it,” Lively told E! When asked about whether he'd be interested in directing a sequel, Baldoni told "Entertainment Tonight," “I think that there are better people for that one."

J.D. Vance, Breaking the Beard Barrier

Not to mention the first millennial on a major party ticket. One unmistakable detail that — in the style of his running mate, Donald J. Trump — not only upended modern political wisdom, but broke a longstanding political taboo. The last bearded man elected president of the United States was Benjamin Harrison, in 1888. The last vice president with a mustache was Charles Curtis, who was Herbert Hoover’s veep. And the last major party candidate to try to break that clean-shaven streak was Thomas E. Dewey, who had a dapper little caterpillar on his upper lip and ran, unsuccessfully, for the highest office in 1944 and 1948.

On an otherwise pleasant day in May 1957, my father received two unwelcome visitors at his tool-and-die factory. The agents intended to use that information as leverage to turn my father, too, into a snitch. Having grown up hearing family stories about my father’s lifelong radical politics, Aaron put through a Freedom of Information Act request for the F.B.I. That file is a reminder of what I inherited from him — not just his politics, but the convictions that they were built on. Dad would have been a logical enough target of scrutiny of J. Edgar Hoover’s F.B.I.

Opinion | Martin Luther King Wasn’t a Lone Messiah

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stands apart from the other civil rights leaders of the 20th century. director J. Edgar Hoover’s paranoia that a Black messiah would emerge to provoke this nation’s oppressed Black masses to revolution. But King was far from a lone messiah. Among those who took inspiration from King was Medgar Evers; they and Malcolm X formed what James Baldwin called the great trio of the civil rights movement. Evers, the then-32-year-old Mississippi field secretary for the N.A.A.C.P., first wrote to King in 1956, hoping to bring him to his home state.

“There’s a lot of reasons to be against Donald Trump,” Biden told donors in San Francisco, according to a pool report, “but damn he shouldn’t be president.”He singled out Trump’s recent use of the word “vermin” to describe his political rivals, likening it to Nazi terminology. “Again, echoes the same phrases used in Nazi Germany.”The president also criticized Trump for his verbal attacks on Paul Pelosi. “On more than one occasion in recent weeks, he’s made a joke about the assaults on Nancy Pelosi’s husband,” Biden said. “The only reason there is an abortion ban in America is because of Donald Trump,” he said, according to the pool report. “The only reason that fundamental right was stripped away from American people for the first time in American history is because of Donald Trump,” Biden went on.

And Republican Rep. George Santos' extensive legal troubles will make it harder for the GOP to keep that Long Island-based district in the Republican column. Some already sounded resigned to serving in the minority during the past week's ups and downs in finding a new speaker, while others voiced hopes the passage of time will make the past three weeks a distant memory. This is Republicans fighting with Republicans, bullying Republicans, even threatening each other. That left House Republicans with the choice of funding the government or shutting it down over their opposition to the healthcare law, and they chose the latter. Further turmoil will only feed into the Democratic argument that House Republicans are incapable of governing.

“Colleen Hoover books always leave me speechless and in tears,” one TikTok reader said. However, Hoover’s work, she says, blurs that line with the addition of painful – and decidedly non-aspirational – narrative arcs. She pointed out what she saw as a pattern in Hoover’s books of women who endure disturbing behavior from their partners. There are the novels the literary world acclaims and there are the novels people actually read. With rare exceptions, these books are written by women, for women. And for the past few years, these books have been written by Colleen Hoover. In 2022 alone, Hoover’s novels sold 14.3 million copies and in total, more than 24 million copies to date. As Hoover herself explained her popularity in an interview in The Times: “It’s not me.

Few causes have united the country like this summer’s multistate effort to kill spotted lanternflies, the colorful invasive insects that have wreaked havoc in at least 14 states. Now, as adult lanternflies begin to perish during the winter, experts say those efforts might have curbed the species’ spread to some degree. Anne Johnson, a doctoral student studying the spotted lanternfly in Hoover’s lab at Penn State, believes the viral trends can make a difference. Spotted lanternflies are native to China, where they don’t often become a pest. “We’ll always have to deal with spotted lanternfly,” Johnson said.
