TJX Companies touted a "strong start" to the holiday shopping season on Wednesday, but its shares slid after the fast-growing retailer offered guidance that appeared to underwhelm Wall Street. "The fourth quarter is off to a strong start, and we are excited about our opportunities for the holiday selling season. For its holiday quarter, TJX is expecting comparable sales to grow between 2% and 3%, largely in line with the 3% uptick that StreetAccount analysts had expected. TJX is standing by its comparable sales guidance of 3% growth for the full year, just shy of the 3.2% growth that StreetAccount analysts had expected. It raised its pretax profit margin outlook from 11.2% to 11.3%, which matches StreetAccount's expectations, along with its earnings per share guidance.

The San Francisco-based couple recently partook in a TikTok trend that features shoppers showing off the quirky items found at their local HomeGoods stores. “You feel the need to walk away with it because it’s gone the next day,” Gavello, 27, said about the appeal of HomeGoods products. But HomeGoods really does dictate for you, it tells you what to buy.”Wood said that he used to go to HomeGoods with his mom and pull out the weirdest items in the store to inspect. The official HomeGoods TikTok account commented on the couple’s video saying, “sometimes you don’t know what you need until you go to HomeGoods.”A representative for HomeGoods did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. HomeGoods has a ton of variety, but it's hard to find consistent candle quality. Paynter RhedThe candle aisle at HomeGoods is my favorite in the whole store. But as fun as the section is to peruse, the wide variety of brands, shapes, and scents can be a mixed bag. I've found that many candles I've bought at the chain either don't burn very well or lose their scent pretty quickly despite seeming amazing in the store. These candles are good in a pinch — and you might get lucky with a great one — but I'd rather spend more money and buy something high quality from an actual candle store.

TJX Companies, which owns Marshalls, HomeGoods and T.J. Maxx, has nearly doubled its annual sales over the past decade, reaching $54.2 billion in fiscal 2024. One way that T.J. Maxx accomplishes this is by making designer brands unsearchable on its website. It's not a T.J. product. It's that brand's product. We have an embarrassment of riches when we look at TJX Companies and Costco in terms of just flat-out value — and a dicey one, admittedly, in Best Buy , which I think has turned an important corner. Costco Research firm Redburn downgraded Costco this week, which made me want to downgrade Redburn. But Costco stock has never been cheap. It was just a one-off thing but I think that Best Buy has worked its way into the conversation after its last quarter. (Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust is long TJX, COST, BBY, AAPL.

Overstock.com is back from the dead

New York CNN —Overstock.com, which was one of the biggest names in e-commerce, is being revived just a year after its new owners ditched the name in favor of Bed Bath & Beyond. The relaunched Overstock.com sells a lot of stuff similar to its previous incarnation, including indoor and outdoor furniture, home improvement tools and jewelry, but with a bigger emphasis on closeout and liquidation deals. Its sister site will still use the Bed Bath & Beyond name and continue to operate with a refined focus on home goods and as a destination for registries for weddings and other life events. In June 2023, Overstock.com changed its name to Bed Bath & Beyond after Overstock’s parent company bought the bankrupt retailer’s brand’s name and domain in a failed effort to benefit from its name recognition. The changes didn’t catch on with shoppers, prompting major moves within the company’s management ranks.

I found this levered concept incredibly valuable when I ran other peoples' money at my hedge fund years ago. My first question to them, usually interjected, rudely, if I were bored or confused was: "What the heck is this business levered to?" Palo Alto Networks To understand this kind of leverage that I am talking about — as opposed to the kind that involves debt —let's start with something easy, let's start with the stock of Palo Alto Networks . Americans could be on a tight budget this summer
  + stars: | 2024-06-20 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
New York CNN —Americans tend to shell out in the summer as they venture outdoors, book trips and step away from their desks. Consumers plan to spend less on away-from-home entertainment and vacations this summer, according to the 2024 KPMG Consumer Pulse Survey released Tuesday. That’s a contrast to last year when Americans shelled out on the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé concert tickets and getaways. Retailers that offer Americans more bang for their buck including Ross Stores, TJ Maxx and HomeGoods-parent TJX, Dollar General and Walmart have benefitted. Americans are also feeling worse about the economy as they struggle with elevated inflation and high borrowing rates.

Here are 9 stocks that can benefit from Fed interest rate cuts

Housing We see Stanley Black & Decker as a major beneficiary of Fed rate cuts due to its link to the housing market. On the one hand, lower rates mean a bank like Wells Fargo makes less money on the money it lends. Biotech Danaher should also see some benefit as lower rates lead to improved funding dynamics for biotech companies. Like in housing, monthly payments become far more manageable at lower rates, and therefore affordability and demand, stand to increase. Salesforce , which has also highlighted more measured deal activity, might not benefit as much from lower rates.

New York CNN —Hourly retail security workers are now wearing police-like body cameras at major stores. The manufacturer of Taser devices and other security companies are now designing and marketing body cameras specifically for retail workers. “Body cameras are just one of the many ways that we work to support a safe store environment,” the spokesperson said. Bakery chain Greggs gave employees body cameras after a rise in sausage roll thefts and threats from customers. Applebaum also expressed concerns about the information the body cameras are collecting and whether it could be used to stymie union organizing attempts.

Mario Anzuoni | ReutersOff-price retailers like TJX Companies and Ross are still posting sales gains and taking market share from rivals, but it's not just because consumers are under pressure and hunting for value. TJX and Ross both reported fiscal first quarter earnings last week that came in better than Wall Street expected, even as both companies lapped outsize growth from the prior-year period. Ross, which runs Ross Dress for Less and dd's Discounts, posted an 8% jump in sales, bringing revenue to $4.86 billion, compared to estimates of $4.83 billion, according to LSEG. "That's because they're providing consistent value to the consumer – and that's branded consistent value to the consumer at a discount price," said Roach. The dynamic is a bit different at Ross, which has more exposure to the lower- and middle-income consumer than TJX does and competes more on price, said Siegel.
