After years of pushing, everything looks ready for Saudi Arabia’s billion-dollar move to become a major force in tennis to take off — with one major hitch. The Ministry of Sport of Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Tennis Federation (STF) and the WTA Tour then announced a three-year deal to host the tour finals. These moves raised Saudi Arabia’s tennis profile, but its potential new tournament at the start of the season was seen as the most important of its tennis investments — and its most divisive. It would cement Saudi Arabia’s place at the center of the sport, bringing with it an extensively criticized human rights record. Saudi Arabia’s moves into tennis have roiled the organisations behind the Grand Slam tournaments.

CNN —Naomi Osaka has never hidden her admiration for Serena Williams and now she’s following in the 23-time grand slam champion’s footsteps. And while Osaka is excited about a new chapter in her career, the four-time grand slam champion says she was initially hesitant to start working with the well-known coach. “This isn’t rude because I found out it’s not true, but I didn’t know if he was a good coach or he coached Serena. I’m really glad that he’s taking this project on, as well.”“I would say I’m still a little nervous around him. But this year, men’s tennis has had a different complexion since none of Federer, Nadal or Djokovic has won a grand slam title for the first time since 2002. Whatever comes next is unlikely to mirror the previous era, leaving men’s tennis in an unfamiliar position, shorn of its three biggest icons who transcended the court. Carlos Alcaraz has already won four grand slam titles at the age of 21. “There has to be a real recalibration … because I already see people talking, like, ‘Can Alcaraz catch Djokovic’s grand slam record?’” Rothenberg tells CNN Sport. Medvedev and Dominic Thiem, who is retiring at the end of this year, are still the only men born in the 1990s to win a grand slam.

Roland Garros, Paris CNN —There is a notable absence among Novak Djokovic’s 98 career singles titles, but the Serbian star is hoping to change that over the coming weeks. In the end, Djokovic progressed with ease, potentially setting up a thrilling second-round match against Rafael Nadal. It’s a feat, sometimes described as a career golden slam, only achieved by Steffi Graf and Serena Williams in the women’s game. “Playing in the Olympic Games is very rare for us tennis players,” Djokovic told reporters, ”and of course for anybody, as it comes every four years. The early stages of the match were particularly one-sided, with Djokovic taking the first set with back-to-back aces in just 24 minutes.

TURIN, Nov 19 (Reuters) - A ruthless Novak Djokovic destroyed home favourite Jannik Sinner to win the ATP Finals title for a record seventh time on Sunday -- reaching yet another milestone in his incredible career. A sell-out crowd in Turin's Pala Alpitour had hoped to cheer the 22-year-old Sinner to the biggest title of his career but Djokovic was simply in a different league. At one point Djokovic won 14 points in a row against a player ranked fourth in the world before Sinner briefly slowed the march of the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic also failed to convert break points that would have given him a 5-2 lead as a few errors crept into his game. The crowd tried their best to energise their man but Djokovic moved on towards victory and a Sinner double fault ended the contest.

TURIN, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Stefanos Tsitsipas retired after just three games of his Green Group clash against Holger Rune at the ATP Finals on Tuesday, handing the Danish debutant his first victory in the event. It's a shame also not to give that spot to someone else to at least try and do something with it," Tsitsipas said. Sinner has enjoyed his best year on Tour and now has 59 match wins in 2023, but none would have given him more pleasure than taking down six-time ATP Finals champion Djokovic. "In the second set tiebreak he played a bit better than me but I think I was brave in the big moments. Sinner made his move at 5-5 in the opening set as Djokovic briefly lost focus after leading 40-0 on serve. A double-fault at deuce was cheered by the crowd and Sinner then converted the break with two punishing backhands. When Sinner then moved 6-5 ahead on serve, Djokovic sat in his chair and conducted the jeers before a calm service hold sent an epic tussle into a shoot-out.

TURIN, Italy (AP) — If Jannik Sinner was feeling any pressure as the crowd’s overwhelming favorite at the ATP Finals, the Italian certainly didn’t show it during a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening match at the season-ending event for the year’s top eight players. Supported by chants of “Vai Jannik” ("Go Jannik") and signs that read “Facci Sognare” ("Let us dream"), Sinner gave the Italian fans just what they came for Sunday with his blistering baseline shots and strong serve. “The match went really, really well and the crowd support was crazy,” Sinner said on court as fans chanted his name.
