As news of Russia’s invasion spread through Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, Dr. Natalia Lukina was waiting for a taxi at her home. It was 6 a.m., and she was eager to get to work at Kherson Children’s Home, a state-run foster home for institutionalized children with special needs, where she served as a doctor. The doctor and her fellow caregivers faced a wrenching dilemma: how to protect the dozens of vulnerable children. Some had living parents who retained limited custody over them, while others had been removed from troubled homes or abandoned. “Who else would have stayed behind to look after them?” Dr. Lukina said about her decision to remain with the children.

In response, Israel launched a full-scale war against Hamas, trapping Mr. Azaiza and two million others under bombardment in Gaza, a tinderbox after decades of conflict. Mr. Azaiza, who had already lived through four wars, grabbed his camera, and stepped out into an unraveling world. But war in Gaza transformed him into a war correspondent for the social media age. Mr. Azaiza documents the effect of Israel’s bombardments in a way typical of his generation: raw footage filmed selfie-style, uploaded as stories. I had one leg on the bed and one leg on the floor,” Mr. Azaiza said.

After a weekend of debilitating airstrikes and a communications blackout, the Israeli military moved deeper into Gaza, and appeared to be approaching Gaza City from at least three sides. Since Israel’s ground invasion began, Yousur Al-Hlou, a Times video journalist, has been in touch with residents of Gaza City. Al-Hlou shares what she has heard from those she has been able to reach, often via WhatsApp voice messages. The Israel-Hamas war is evolving by the minute. To help bring you the most up-to-date developments, we’re beginning “The Headlines: War Briefing,” where you’ll hear the latest from our correspondents on the ground every afternoon.

For 34 hours, the vast majority of the more than two million Palestinians who live in Gaza had no way to reach the outside world, or one another. They had no way to know whether their loved ones were alive or dead. Desperate paramedics tried to save people by driving toward the sound of explosions. In response to the attacks, the Israeli military declared a siege of the densely populated territory, cutting off electricity, water and medical supplies as it rained down a relentless barrage of aerial and artillery bombardments. The Israeli military also said that it was conducting airstrikes in Lebanon after at least 16 rockets were launched from there into Israeli territory.

A Palestinian fighter of the Al-Quds brigade in a military tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip last year. Overnight on Saturday, Israeli fighter planes struck 150 underground targets in the northern Gaza Strip, the Israeli military said. The group’s leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, said in 2021 that there were 310 miles of tunnels in Gaza. Ben Milch, an Israeli American who cleared tunnels with the Israeli military during the 2014 Gaza War, said his unit came under fire repeatedly while working to destroy some 13 tunnels. After the Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it had destroyed the tunnel to the sea, it released a video of another incident.

It was increasingly difficult to reach people in the Gaza Strip or know what was happening in the enclave late Friday, as Israel said it was stepping up its bombardment and staging another incursion. On Friday evening, two major Palestinian mobile networks, Jawwal and Paltel, said that their phone and internet services were down. Some Palestinians who have managed to communicate with the outside world said that fear and panic were spreading. They don’t know what’s happening around them.”Visuals from inside Gaza on social media channels monitored by The New York Times and some wire services were extremely limited on Friday afternoon. Reuters maintained a live camera directed from the Israeli side of the border toward the Gaza skyline that showed darkness with an occasional burst of light.

But I am still breathing, just still breathing. I used to be having everything normal. Tasneem Ismael Ahel’s audio messages typically arrive all at once. ImageFor many Palestinians in Gaza, sporadic access to WhatsApp is one of the few outlets for sharing firsthand accounts of the war happening around them: raw reflections on death, despair and shattered dreams sent via audio messages from a territory under siege. For two weeks in mid-October, Tasneem, a 19-year-old college student from Gaza City, documented how her hometown was transformed under Israeli bombardment, sharing daily updates with The New York Times in the form of an audio diary.

Image Palestinians wounded in Ahli Arab Hospital blast were later treated at another hospital in Gaza on Tuesday. Israel said the strike on the hospital parking lot was caused by a misfired Palestinian rocket, citing intelligence intercepts and videos of the sky above Gaza at the time. Al Jazeera, a Qatari news channel, concluded that a Palestinian rocket had been intercepted by an Israeli air defense missile. Scores of public institutions in northern Gaza, including hospitals like the Ahli Arab hospital, were warned by Israel to evacuate. American intelligence agencies have assessed that the blast killed 100 to 300 people.

The devastating impact of an explosion at the Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City on Tuesday became clearer on Wednesday through videos that witnesses posted to social media. Emergency workers were collecting bodies and remains in an effort to identify the dead. “There are still lots of bodies they haven’t yet collected,” said Amir Ahmed, a paramedic with the Palestinian Red Crescent in Gaza City. “There are too many bodies.” He said all the victims would be buried in a mass grave at a funeral later on Wednesday. Neither side’s account could be independently verified immediately, and the cause of the blast and the precise death toll remained unclear.

In video clips verified by The New York Times, scores of Palestinian bodies were filmed strewn across the courtyard of the Ahli Arab Hospital, some bloodied, charred, mangled or in pieces. The explosion at the hospital came a day after Iran warned that “other multiple fronts will open” if Israeli attacks continued to kill civilians in Gaza. Hundreds of families had fled to the hospital in search of refuge after 11 days of Israeli strikes elsewhere in Gaza. Image Two Palestinian children injured in the explosion at Ahli Arab Hospital were taken to another hospital in Gaza, Al-Shifa, for treatment. The Health Ministry in Gaza said that Ahli Arab Hospital was also struck on Sunday.

Here is what we know so far about the explosion at the Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City. The Israeli military said Wednesday morning that the number of casualties was inflated. On Wednesday, Archbishop Naoum said that the Israeli military had called and texted the hospital managers at least three times in recent days, asking its patients and staff to leave the hospital compound. Archbishop Naoum said the warnings were particular to the hospital, and not part of Israel’s wider push to encourage civilians to leave northern Gaza for the territory’s south. Lt. Col. Amnon Shefler, an Israeli military spokesman, said the calls to the hospital were part of a wider campaign to urge civilians to leave northern Gaza ahead of an expected Israeli invasion.

For more than a year, civilian doctors in Ukraine have been swapping their white coats for military fatigues, joining thousands of combat medics — from nurses to anesthesiologists to pediatricians — who are putting their lives on the line to treat an endless stream of casualties. In this exclusive video, New York Times journalists spent a week inside a military field hospital in eastern Ukraine, filming a team of combat medics as they raced to save the lives of wounded soldiers. “We’re working on two front lines,” said Oleksiy Nazarishin, a Ukrainian surgeon and the chief medical officer. For the medics, it’s a grueling cycle of trauma, death and exhaustion. And when an injured enemy Russian soldier arrives at the field hospital, the medics must set aside their anger and uphold their medical oath to treat him like any other patient.

The war slogs on in the meantime: Russian soldiers kill or wound as many as thousands of Ukrainian troops a week, adding to the invasion’s toll. My colleagues Yousur Al-Hlou, Masha Froliak and Ben Laffin published a striking video today from the front lines, following Ukrainian combat medics. I urge you to watch the video, which changed how I look at the sacrifice Ukrainians have been forced to make. I spoke to Yousur and Masha about their experience following these medics for a week. Volodymyr Ruchkovskyi needed to do one last thing before he could leave Bucha. His father, who was staying behind, was without food and electricity, so he brought him groceries and said one last goodbye. Volodymyr didn’t know that the occupation of Bucha had just begun, or that he was now driving toward a convoy of Russian forces. Just before 1 p.m., Russian soldiers shot at his car, forcing him to crash into a tree. His burned remains were found inside the car weeks later.
Since the early days of the invasion, Mr. Putin has conceded, privately, that the war has not gone as planned. “I think he is sincerely willing” to compromise with Russia, Mr. Putin said of Mr. Zelensky in 2019. To join in Mr. Putin’s war, he has recruited prisoners, trashed the Russian military and competed with it for weapons. After Ukrainian forces stage ambushes and cut off the key access route to the capital, Russian soldiers tell their relatives that the military strategy is failing. … That’s what we’re fucking going to do, it seems. “Frankly speaking, nobody understands why we have to fight this war," Sergey tells his girlfriend. Replay‘I’ll quit at once.’Frustrated by continuous setbacks and fearing for their lives, Russian soldiers say they are fed up with the military. As quickly as they came, the Russian soldiers in northern Kyiv withdrew, regrouped and pivoted east, where Russian-backed separatists have been waging war for over eight years.
