But the portrayal of trans women as predators was a new innovation that had a huge impact on the horror genre. Andit had a big impact on Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs” in which the terrifying serial killer, Buffalo Bill, is a predatory trans woman (or more precisely, as Jos Truitt has explained, Bill is a transphobic caricature of a trans woman). The danger isn’t from trans women — it’s from heterosexual cis patriarchs — a reality much truer to life than Hitchcock’s fever dream. Perhaps in part for that reason, the director is careful not to make Longlegs trans or gay. It’s not just “Longlegs” which displaces violence onto queer people: Movies like “Psycho” and “Silence of the Lambs” are often acts of aggression aimed by male directors at queer people (and especially at queer women).

Peggy Mellon Hitchcock, the energetic scion of a storied wealthy family who funded Timothy Leary’s psychedelic adventures — and famously helped him find the spot to do so, at her brothers’ estate in Millbrook, N.Y. — died on April 9 at her home in Tucson, Ariz. She was 90. Ms. Hitchcock had been suffering from endometrial cancer. It’s too desperate, too confused, too pleased with its petty shocks to rile anything you’d recognize as genuine excitement. This thing was written and directed by Emerald Fennell, whose previous movie was “Promising Young Woman,” a horror flick about rape that was also a revenge comedy. These two meet, in earnest, when Oliver loans Felix his bike, a moment Oliver’s been waiting for. When Oliver tells Felix his father’s just died, Felix extends his Saltburn invitation out of sincere compassion. He’s the one nonwhite major character in “Saltburn,” a fact the movie considers doing something intriguing with but abandons.
