At 34, he was the city’s youngest ever mayor, and he campaigned on a promise of self-determination for the predominantly Black city. It’s an ongoing factor in Mississippi politics,” said Leslie McLemore, a former Jackson State University political science professor who also once sat on the Jackson City Council. That was on top of years of boil-water notices that eroded residents’ trust in the city’s water supply. In April, a push by conservative legislators to strip local control of the city’s water system failed for the second time in the House. Rogelio V. Solis / AP fileByron D'Andra Orey, a political science professor at Jackson State University, said the bribery scandal could shape the municipal elections.

It faced a June 2025 deadline to complete the project, according to the federal indictment outlining grand jury charges against Lumumba, Owens and Banks. Lumumba faces five charges, including one count of federal program bribery and another count of money laundering. Banks has been charged with one conspiracy to commit federal program bribery, honest services wire fraud and money laundering, in addition to a count of federal program bribery. At least seven people have pleaded guilty in relation to the scandal. “This indictment is a horrible example of a flawed FBI investigation,” Owens told reporters after he pleaded not guilty Thursday.

The longtime elected coroner in Hinds County, Mississippi, who faced withering criticism last year for burying men in pauper's graves without notifying their families, is stepping down early. Sharon Grisham-Stewart, a Democrat, announced Monday that she would retire Dec. 31, three years before the end of her current term. The mother of one of those men, Jonathan Hankins, confronted Grisham-Stewart in February at the county's pauper's field. And the Justice Department stepped in, saying it would help authorities in Hinds County and Jackson improve their death notification procedures. Grisham-Stewart was first elected as Hinds County coroner in 1999 and last won re-election in 2023.

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda attends a session in the financial affairs committee at the lower house of parliament on Aug. 23, 2024 in Tokyo. Economists, FX strategists and Japan-focused fund managers are split over the timing of the Bank of Japan's next interest rate hike, according to a new CNBC International survey. BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said last month that the central bank would continue to raise interest rates if inflation stayed on course, while also closely monitoring financial market conditions. "We think the central bank will be keen to move gradually and allow the impact of the July rate hike to be fully felt," said Jessica Hinds, director in Fitch Ratings' economics team. CNBC's survey found 18.75% of respondents expect a hike for the October meeting, while another 25% said a hike was possible.

Then again — how could I miss my own first day of school as an educator? As an educator myself, I remember bonding with certain parent volunteers who would share information about kids. My relationship with her was on a great foot, and for the first time, it didn't matter so much that I didn't get to meet my kids' teacher for the first few months of school.

When I was a high school educator, I got a surprising phone call from a parent one morning. I was speechless — I'd never heard someone ask to volunteer at the high school level before. AdvertisementBut I don't see many parents in school hallways in middle and high school. Family involvement dwindles every year after 5th grade, and by high school, I only see parents discussing serious stuff like grades and college admissions. Some parents who usher at plays or poetry readings enjoy it so much, they say they want to go back to high school again.

Kid-led birthday parties allow kids to practice practical skills every step of the way, taking work off the parents' plates. There are different expectations with park parties because people can bring potluck dishes. My kids decorated the gift bags for the park party — a wonderful rainy Sunday afternoon activity. The bunny paper crafts, purchased online for $10, kept the kids just as busy as the mall art center projects.

Not long after Eric Adams became the mayor of New York City, he quickly rewarded a cadre of loyalists with plum jobs in his administration. Now Mr. Adams is casting favor upon a new set of people looking out for his interests: defense lawyers. The firm has already been paid more than $730,000 by the mayor’s five-month-old legal defense fund. Mr. Adams intends to bring aboard Randy Mastro, a lawyer known for his aggressive tactics and roster of contentious clients and causes, to represent him as the city’s corporation counsel. Mr. Mastro would earn roughly $250,000 a year and would replace Sylvia Hinds-Radix, a former judge who has a more reserved style.

With Mayor Eric Adams and top aides facing a tangle of investigations and lawsuits, he is quietly maneuvering to replace New York City’s top lawyer with a veteran litigator known for his aggressive tactics, two people who are familiar with the matter said. The city is in the final stages of hiring Randy Mastro, a former federal prosecutor who served as chief of staff and deputy mayor to former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, a Republican, according to the two people, who were granted anonymity to discuss a sensitive matter. The city’s current corporation counsel, Sylvia O. Hinds-Radix, a former judge who served in the role for nearly two and a half years, is expected to leave the administration. Mr. Mastro has met with City Hall aides to discuss the job, and the city’s Department of Investigation has been notified that he is expected to join the administration, according to one of the people, and it will conduct a background investigation.

Israel's reported use of AI in its war against Hamas is highlighting many of the problems concerning future warfare. There are military benefits to AI, but the tools to keep it in check aren't coming fast enough. AdvertisementArtificial intelligence is playing a key and, by some accounts, highly disturbing role in Israel's war in Gaza. AdvertisementIt's time-consuming, and in Israel's case, there's likely been a desire to develop a lot of targets very quickly, Scharre said. That's a substantial number of errors given the scale of Israel's air war and the significant increase in available targets provided by AI.

Hinds County Chancery Judge Crystal Wise Martin blocked the law in October 2022 after Parents for Public Schools sued the state. The nonprofit group argued the grants would give private schools a competitive advantage over public schools. “Any appropriation of public funds to be received by private schools adversely affects schools and their students,” Martin wrote. Tate Reeves created a grant program to help private schools pay for water, broadband and other infrastructure projects. State attorneys also wrote that the Mississippi Constitution only blocks the Legislature from sending money directly to private schools.

In Hinds County, such training is typically completed by early October before a November general election, according to Election Commissioner Shirley Varnado. Mississippi has a general election Tuesday with key races such as governor and secretary of state — the state’s top election official. In 2020, Democrat Joe Biden won the county with 73% of the vote, while Republican Donald Trump received 57.5% statewide. Issues with the state’s network were resolved and access to the statewide election management system was restored, according to state election officials.
