TJX Companies touted a "strong start" to the holiday shopping season on Wednesday, but its shares slid after the fast-growing retailer offered guidance that appeared to underwhelm Wall Street. "The fourth quarter is off to a strong start, and we are excited about our opportunities for the holiday selling season. For its holiday quarter, TJX is expecting comparable sales to grow between 2% and 3%, largely in line with the 3% uptick that StreetAccount analysts had expected. The glue pizza search result was traced back to a comment from a Redditor who went by "fucksmith" making an obvious joke on the subreddit r/Pizza. Because I'm both brave and a genius, naturally, I had to try to make the glue pizza myself. Was Google's response to tamp down its big AI search ambitions just because a few jokesters on X made silly queries? The ridiculousness of those AI answers does call into question the entire concept of using AI for Google search results. And I like to convince myself that my eating glue pizza was part of the noise that prompted Google to act.

Mario Anzuoni | ReutersOff-price retailers like TJX Companies and Ross are still posting sales gains and taking market share from rivals, but it's not just because consumers are under pressure and hunting for value. TJX and Ross both reported fiscal first quarter earnings last week that came in better than Wall Street expected, even as both companies lapped outsize growth from the prior-year period. Ross, which runs Ross Dress for Less and dd's Discounts, posted an 8% jump in sales, bringing revenue to $4.86 billion, compared to estimates of $4.83 billion, according to LSEG. "That's because they're providing consistent value to the consumer – and that's branded consistent value to the consumer at a discount price," said Roach. The dynamic is a bit different at Ross, which has more exposure to the lower- and middle-income consumer than TJX does and competes more on price, said Siegel.

TJX Companies shares climbed to an all-time high Wednesday after reporting better-than-expected fiscal first-quarter results Wednesday. In the quarter, TJX returned a total of $886 million to shareholders in the quarter, with $609 million coming via buybacks and another $377 in dividend payments. Full year sales guidance was revised lower by about $150 million at the midpoint due to foreign exchange dynamics. Comparable same store sales guidance was left unchanged.

Higher sales and lower COGS resulted in better-than-expected gross margin expansion that trickled down to a bottom-line beat. The company's pretax profit margin also expanded versus the year-ago period, benefiting from a higher merchandise margin. The strong merchandise margin was attributable to less shrink (theft), reduced freight costs, and lower markdowns. It is looking at what categories were successful at nearby – and closing – Bed Bath & Beyond stores. The off-price giant has been called out frequently by analysts as being one of the key beneficiaries of Bed Bath & Beyond's recent demise. Herrman said it is "re-ranking" its assortment only at its HomeGoods stores that are located near to any closing Bed Bath & Beyond locations, rather than making broad changes across all of its network. It's not just TJ Maxx and HomeGoods that are teeing up for a Bed Bath & Beyond-related windfall, however. Amazon, Walmart, and Target are also in line to capitalize from these closures and have been slowly chipping away at Bed Bath & Beyond's market share for many years.

Higher prices on food led to soft sales of electronics, toys, home and apparel in the most recent quarter at Walmart. McMillon said he believed inflation on dry groceries and items made for immediate consumption would remain high "for a while". "Food inflation has been the most stubborn of all the categories," Walmart's U.S. CEO John Furner said. Sharp sales declines in categories other than food are forcing retailers like Target (TGT.N) to slash prices on everything from toys to electronics. While groceries comprise 56% of Walmart sales, they make up about 20% of sales at Target, which depends more on home furnishings, apparel and beauty.
T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods are benefiting from the struggles other retailers are facing, parent company TJX says. Store closures and slowdowns mean there's more, better inventory for TJX brands to choose from. TJX is also seeing an influx of customers as competing brands close stores nationwide. Those struggles have led customers to flock to TJX chains, Herrman said. "We're attracting new customers, we're opening new stores, and we're likely to benefit from other home store closures," Herrman said.
