Did she know any artists? “Yeah,” she said, “I know a few.”The place was just eight by 25 feet, and the idea was to make a gallery by artists, for artists. The first show there was an exhibition of pencil drawings by Steven Kramer, Ms. Astor’s husband at the time; all 20 of the pieces sold, at $50 each, which seemed like a promising beginning. Mr. Scharf, who had already turned all of the appliances at Ms. Astor’s home into his signature outer-space critters, was offered the next show. He was also given the opportunity to name the place for its duration.

By Diego DelgadoACAPULCO, Mexico (Reuters) - A 35-year-old sea turtle refuge in Acapulco is fighting for its life after the most powerful hurricane on record to strike Mexico's Pacific coast tore it apart last week. Campamento Tortuguero Playa Hermosa (Playa Hermosa Turtle Camp) has since the 1980s been working on Acapulco's beachfront to protect the marine reptiles, collecting their eggs so they can safely nest, hatch and return to the Pacific Ocean. Olive ridley turtles visit the camp in the rainy season, and Vallerino was preparing for the arrival of the brown leatherback turtle in cooler waters when Otis struck. Initially forecast just to become a tropical storm, Otis strengthened with a ferocity that stunned weather experts. "Sea turtles have been around since the time of the dinosaurs and are totally enigmatic animals," she said.

[1/5] A sick sea lion is marked with paint and left on a beach, unable to be rescued due to overcrowded facilities, as toxic algae is being blamed for causing sickness to sea lions and dolphins along the coast of Southern California, in Redondo Beach, California, U.S., June 23, 2023. Experts say a recent outbreak of algae bloom - commonly known as red tide - has sickened and killed an unknown number of sea lions and dolphins. Marine biologists are paying close attention because they consider sea lions a sentinel species - animals that can help identify environmental risks to humans. The Channel Islands Marine & Wildlife Institute reported 1,000 sightings of sick and dead marine mammals from June 8 through 14. Sea lions are a fixture on many California beaches, sunning on the shoreline, barking at each other, and sometimes looking for an easy meal from tourists.

On a Sunday afternoon, Rory Manns, 25, strolled into the park, soccer ball in hand. Located to the west of Downtown Los Angeles, the Vista Hermosa Natural Park is a pocket of rolling woodlands that cradle streams and lush meadows. It has always been a space of community, peppered with picnic areas, a playground and an amphitheater. Meeting at the park was therapeutic for the group, allowing them to express themselves and learn from one another in a safe, intimate space. “Just how affirming and natural and just how seen you feel in a friendship, how deep those connections are.

Today, it's a fast-casual Mexican restaurant chain with 15 locations across New York, Miami and Washington, D.C. That's a far cry from Tacombi's beach days, which started when Wolos bought his 1963 green VW "bus" in Mexico City for $3,000. Wolos converted the van into a mobile restaurant where he sold his first tacos, he told Total Food Service in November. He wrote a business plan for a restaurant chain concept called "Taco Rex" where he'd sell Mexican food that was, to him, actually Mexican. "I saw that Taco Bell, Chipotle and Old El Paso and all these legacy brands of Mexican food weren't connecting people to this side of Mexico."

Theoretically, Grant's real estate income alone is enough to cover her living expenses, which makes her job dispensable.
