Tropical Storm Debby, which came ashore as a category 1 hurricane along the Florida coast early Monday, will move across the Southeast on Tuesday at roughly the speed of a human walking. Like Debby, both storms stalled over the region and became reminders that a hurricane’s hazards can persist and intensify for days after it makes landfall. Even small changes in the steering currents could result in Debby shifting and changing where the rain falls. The storm will most likely move slightly offshore, allowing some restrengthening before the storm turns north and moves back inland. Debby will funnel huge amounts of moisture northward and collide with cooler air moving into the region, allowing storms to form.

Outside Delta, a one-stoplight town in the scrublands of central Utah, a giant battery is taking shape underground. Two caverns, each as deep as the Empire State Building is tall, are being created from a geological salt formation, using water to dissolve and remove the salt. As the world seeks to fight climate change by burning less coal, oil and other fossil fuels, the spotlight is shifting to hydrogen as an alternative. Hydrogen produces no planet-warming emissions when burned, making it a potential replacement fuel in transportation, electricity generation and industries like the making of cement and steel. But with this project and a second mammoth construction site across the street, developers are taking hydrogen’s potential to another level.

Three years after its marathon voyage across the Central Arctic Ocean frozen in the ice, the German scientific research ship Polarstern has once again reached the North Pole. This time the expedition is shorter, two months rather than a full year, and the ship is powering through the ice, not encased in it and adrift. But the goal of the scientists on board is the same: a better understanding of how the Central Arctic is changing as the planet warms. Sea-ice coverage in the Arctic shrinks in spring and summer and reaches a minimum in mid-September. The record was set in 2012, and Polarstern was in the Arctic that year, too.
