As an emergency doctor, I know that it’s incredibly rare for standard resuscitation protocols including CPR to revive patients brought to the hospital in cardiac arrest. Survival rates after cardiac arrest have hardly improved in decades, so when I heard about these statistics from one program in Minnesota, I was very eager to visit it. Here is what to know about ECPR and its availability. In the E.R., doctors will continue with chest compressions and administer other standard resuscitation measures. When this high-tech treatment is used during cardiac arrest, the intervention is called ECPR.

Until that Thursday in August 2022, John Sauer’s most pressing health concern had been his seasonal allergies. She told her daughter to call 911, and the two women struggled to get Sauer, who is very tall and rather bulky, onto the ground to start CPR. The crucial roles instead seem to be played by bile acids and antimicrobial peptides in the gut, each of which increase markedly after surgery; Seeley is still sorting out the exact mechanisms of their influence. “Why bariatric surgery works so well is because you’re changing lots of things at the same time,” Seeley says. But it’s also what makes our workplace so dangerous, more than ever, and jeopardizes the emergency care that everyone receives. Last year one of my patients was on the phone, lamenting about how long he had been in the emergency room. When I turned to look at him, he yelled a racial epithet before hurling a desktop computer into the area where doctors and nurses sit.
