The Federal Reserve will take center stage in the coming days as Wall Street attempts to put a mixed week behind it. They represented the last look at U.S. inflation before the Fed gathers for a two-day policy meeting this week. Broadcom was, perhaps unsurprisingly, the top-performing stock in the S & P 500 for the week, gaining 25.2%. Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. Twenty-six of our 32 portfolio stocks have delivered their results this earnings season (we didn't own Abbott Labs at the time of its report). It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. In the week ahead, two more Club names are set to report earnings before a market-moving economic update arrives Thursday morning. The two other reports of note are the January new home sales report on Monday and ISM Manufacturing report on Friday.

As August is known to be, it's been a rough month-to-date for all three of those stock market benchmarks so far. This past week, the overall market was oversold, according to Jim Cramer's trusted S & P Oscillator. After Friday's strong finish, we'll see if the market's oversold condition abates as two major themes play out in the week ahead: Earnings from two Club names — Salesforce (CRM) and Broadcom (AVGO) — and key economic reports ahead of September's Fed meeting. Outside of the labor market and inflation, we'll also get a look at the housing market with the pending home sales on Wednesday. As we heard from fellow Club name Palo Alto Networks (PANW) last week, companies are growing more cautious and more closely scrutinizing large sales deals.

Higher costs and a shortage of available new parts are also delaying aircraft repairs, which risk pushing up air fares. Some makers of brand-name parts like General Electric Co (GE.N) stand to benefit because they also sell used parts, known as used serviceable material. Honeywell Aerospace Trading (HON.O), the U.S. conglomerate's used parts business, is among companies enjoying higher demand since 2021. Ultimately, the alternatives to new parts may bring relief but a congested supply chain must be fixed, said Benjamin Hockenberg, president of JSSI Parts & Leasing. "Certain models, certain situations, (used parts) will fill the void, but I think we also need to see a repaired supply chain," said Hockenberg.
But first, Elon Musk staked his Twitter leadership on a poll and it closed just minutes ago. Elon Musk topped off a turbulent week by launching a poll asking Twitter users whether he should quit as CEO. After SEC filings showed Musk sold about $3.6 billion of Tesla stock, its share price tumbled more than 15% amid a growing view that Twitter is becoming a distraction. This is a developing story and Tesla stock is currently up almost 5% in premarket trading. ICYMI: Phil Rosen, your usual host of this newsletter, discussed the "stunning" state of America's oil industry with Citi's Ed Morse.
But what irked markets was Fed Chair Jerome Powell's indication the Fed could continue to raise rates for longer to bring inflation under control. The S & P 500 lost around 2.25% for the week, closing out Friday down more than 1%. Under the hood, the consumer discretionary sector led to the downside this week, followed by financials and technology. Initial jobless claims for the week ending Dec. 10 came in at 211,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the prior week and below expectations of 232,000.
