Former billionaire investor Sung Kook “Bill” Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendant’s lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. While Archegos eventually managed $36 billion, Hwang’s borrowing helped him amass $160 billion of exposure to stocks. Hwang’s co-defendant, former Archegos Chief Financial Officer Patrick Halligan, was convicted at the same trial on three criminal charges.

Luxury retailer Burberry 's shares present an attractive investment opportunity after the company revealed a new turnaround strategy, according to hedge fund manager David Neuhauser. The stock, which is also traded in the U.S. and Germany, remains down around 40% year-to-date, however. UBS said Burberry was the only luxury retailer not to report "weak organic sales growth" in the latest quarter. "I think Burberry has a good turnaround in place with a new CEO," Neuhauser added, while cautioning that the recovery might take longer than expected. Both stocks benefit from the trading of other, non-bitcoin assets across the crypto market. Bitcoin moved higher Tuesday even as other risk assets sold off amid rising geopolitical tensions between Ukraine and Russia. That drove bitcoin to fresh records and sent smaller crypto assets soaring. Like gold, crypto assets are seen by many investors as a "non-confiscatable," long-term hedge against geopolitical uncertainty. Citigroup, for example, in a note Monday reiterated the bank's view that bitcoin doesn't exhibit store-of-value properties.

Three Wall Street banks have taken differing views on gold's trajectory in 2025, reflecting the complex economic outlook. Goldman Sachs expects the price of the yellow metal to reach $3,000 per ounce by December 2025, saying "Go For Gold" in a note from Nov. 17. The gold price has declined by 7% since late October as the risk of a disputed U.S. election result diminished. While maintaining a positive outlook on gold, UBS warned that its gains — gold had risen 35% this year until November — could slow down. Goldman Sachs pointed to a fivefold increase in central bank gold purchases, driven by concerns about financial sanctions and sovereign debt sustainability.

Investors may soon be forced to take on more risk and rethink their diversification strategies due to macroeconomic uncertainties. And that presents challenges for those who follow the traditional balance of 60% stocks to 40% bonds as a diversifier, he added. "Momentum has really been driving equities higher across the board, especially with respect to large-cap growth names," Adams said. The study found that stocks, bonds, and options strategies could have more correlated risk than is evident on the surface.
