CNN —After a year fraught with personal and professional turbulence, Rory McIlroy ended 2024 in his much-frequented happy place: the winner’s circle. I’ve been through a lot this year professionally, personally,” McIlroy told Sky Sports. “Their support means the world to me,” McIlroy told reporters. “I think everyone knows what Seve means to European golf and to Ryder Cup players,” McIlroy said. We had a changing room with Seve’s shirt from ‘95, the last Ryder Cup he played,” he continued, wiping away tears.

CNN —The Chicago Bears kicked off Week 6’s Sunday action by moving to 4-2 as they defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars 35-16 in London, England. The matchup was officially listed as a Bears home game, and it certainly had the atmosphere of one. Ian Walton/APWilliams and the Chicago offense struggled mightily to start the game, only mustering seven yards of offense in the first quarter. A series of defensive penalties helped Chicago move the chains with the drive culminating in another Williams TD pass to Allen to start the fourth quarter. The Jags scored again via another Lawrence to Davis touchdown pass but were unable to make any further inroads into the Bears lead.

Found Golf Balls CEO Shaun Shienfield, whose company recovers and resells millions of lost balls across the US and Canada each year, told CNN that he gauged the average to be between three and four each round. Using Shienfield’s low estimate, that’s over 1.5 billion balls lost in the US every year since 2020. “While precise global estimates are challenging … the worldwide figure could easily exceed 3 to 5 billion golf balls lost each year,” Petersen told CNN. Mitchell Schols, founder of Canada-based Biodegradable Golf Balls, put a “very conservative” estimate for North America at one million balls lost to oceans annually. One UK-based man told CNN in 2015 that he could earn up to £100,000 (about $114,000) annually by diving to retrieve golf balls from lakes on golf courses.

Read previewAn art museum in Australia that was embroiled in a gender dispute involving several "Picasso" paintings has admitted that the works were fake. The paintings had been at the center of a gender battle that broke out after a man from the Australian state of New South Wales took legal action against the gallery after being refused entry to the museum's "Ladies Lounge" exhibition. The exhibition contained some of the museum's most notable artworks, including some said to have been produced by the Spanish Cubist Pablo Picasso. "I knew of a number of Picasso paintings I could borrow from friends, but none of them were green and I wished for the Lounge to be monochrome. The forgery prompted a reevaluation of other works displayed in the Ladies Lounge, and Kaechele revealed that some other items were also not genuine.

A pink card will be used for concussion substitutions at this summer’s Copa America. AdvertisementCONMEBOL has said teams must report to the referee or fourth official when they believe a player has suffered a “suspected cranioencephalic trauma and concussion”, with a pink card then being shown to indicate the replacement will not use an allocated slot in a clear protocol for concussion substitutions. A maximum of one pink card per team will be issued per game, and the opposition team will “have the option to use an additional substitute and an additional substitution opportunity”. How to follow the Copa America on The Athletic…In March, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved permanent concussion substitutions following successful trial periods in divisions including England’s Premier League. CNN —Soccer is set to trial sin bins at the higher levels of the game in a bid to improve player behavior towards match officials – a move that has drawn a mixed response. The International Football Association Board (IFAB), the sport’s lawmaking body, announced on Monday that sin bins should be trialed “for dissent and specific tactical offences” having been successfully implemented at a grassroots level. Richard Heathcote/Getty ImagesBut not everyone is in favor of sin bins. “Considering football can’t decide what is clear and obvious from one week to the next, sin bins and the threshold for being banished to one have no chance,” CNN Senior Sports Analyst Darren Lewis wrote on X. He continued: “The success of sin bins in the grassroots game has been prevention, rather than cure.

Golf plays on a different axis in the “Land of the Midnight Sun,” and nowhere is that difference more pronounced than at Tromsø golf club, the world’s northernmost 18-hole golf course. Arguably though, it’s overhead where Tromsø golf club really separates itself. It’s a one-of-a-kind experience that has helped drive what Sonsteby has noted as an increased appetite for golf in the region, with Tromsø golf club adding 65 new members to its 470 total membership this year alone. “Now we see the massive increase that Viktor and Suzann have created in golf in this country,” Stephen Newey, head pro at Oslo Golf Club and Pettersen’s junior coach, told CNN. “The kids want to play golf – ‘I want to be like Viktor, I want to be like Suzann,’ and they can.”

Many states subsidize golf courses with low property taxes, so non-golfers are footing the bill. David Madison/Getty ImagesUrban golf courses also cost taxpayers — even those who don't play — a lot of money. Proponents of retrofitting courses note that reducing the number of golf courses would help boost revenue for courses that do survive. "But then on the flip side, we have these public golf courses that are just these almost vacuous spaces that are quite underutilized." He noted that projects that just involve turning golf courses into parks are often most palatable to neighbors.
