The rise in the use of Ozempic for reasons beyond treating diabetes has led to a national shortage. Now, attention has shifted to a dietary supplement called berberine, which is being touted on social media as "nature's Ozempic." Similar to Ozempic, berberine decreases blood sugar and can lead to weight reduction, says Giordano who is also co-founder of Rebesana, a company that researches healthspan and lifespan. "It doesn't slow down how the stomach empties, which is one of the main ways that Ozempic and Mounjaro work." But Giordano says berberine appears to have great health benefits that far exceed weight loss: "I don't know why doctors don't recommend this regularly."

Exercise is one of the daily practices that experts recommend for a long and healthy life. And Dr. Peter Attia, a physician who researches longevity, thinks exercise has a greater effect on lifespan than other lifestyle factors like nutrition and sleep. But how often you should work out each week varies, depending on factors like age and time constraints. "You don't have to be exercising 14 to 16 hours per week," if doing so isn't feasible, Attia added. Still, there is one specific way that people should structure their workouts to achieve optimal health, Attia said, regardless of how much time you have.

The ultra-wealthy are betting on tech and science breakthroughs to live longer. Longevity expert Dr. Peter Attia explained why preventative care like that still isn't widespread. The ultra wealthy have been shelling out to live longer for some time. In his view, there's a key obstacle standing in the way of your long-term health, ironically: the U.S. healthcare system. Attia's definition of longevity is a function of lifespan, the number of years you live, and healthspan, how well you can live them.

But although we're likely to live to an older age than our grandparents' generation, that doesn't mean we're any healthier than they are. "It's between four and eight years that we live longer than our grandparents," on average, says Greg Macpherson, cellular health expert and founder of SRW Laboratories, a biotechnology company. "People are generally living longer, and we're generally losing less people earlier. "We're living longer, but we're kind of grinding our way through the last maybe 25% of our life with some form of health condition," Macpherson says. About 65% of people over the age of 60 are living with multiple health issues, he adds.
It is widely believed, and backed by science, that women outlive men, but there is new talk of the role your height might play in longevity — specifically, shorter people may live longer than taller people. Here are their theories about why shorter people may live longer than their opposites. The lifespans of shorter people appear to be longer than their taller counterparts, the paper says. David Sinclair Co-founder and Scientific Advisor of Tally HealthYet, height isn't the only reason women live longer. Robine's hypothesis for why women live longer is simply this: "Women are more resistant to mortality [and] to death than men because they are just resisting more to difficulties."
Living to 90 is a feat in itself, but imagine being able to compete in triathlons even as you near that distinguished age. This is the reality for Dr. Joseph Maroon, an 82-year-old triathlete who also works as a consultant neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers and medical director of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). "I tell people my goal in life is to die young as late as possible," Maroon says. "The physical activity literally saved my life." From that point forward, Maroon made some serious changes to his daily habits, which he believes added extra years to both his "healthspan" and his lifespan.
For decades, scientists have studied lifespan to determine the impact of the factors that dictate how humans age. Lifespan and healthspan will always overlap in some way, but there is a major difference between the two, says Alan Cohen, associate professor at the Butler Columbia Aging Center at Columbia University. Here's how each term is defined and how diet may play a role in lengthening them both, according to Cohen. Healthspan vs. lifespan: What's the difference? There are different aging metrics, so one diet won't decrease aging across the board.
