The stock prices of America’s largest health insurance providers — including Aetna owner CVS Health, Cigna and Humana — have also tumbled recently. As of Tuesday’s closing bell, the Dow had fallen 1,564 points since Dec. 4, with UnitedHealth Group accounting for 804 of those points. UnitedHealth Group is also the worst performer in the 30-stock index this month, with losses more than double those of the second-worst performer, Goldman Sachs. Once again, CVS, UnitedHealth Group, Cigna and Humana all rank as the worst performers, with double-digit losses of 18% to 25%. Those businesses have drawn widespread criticism in part because many of the biggest insurance providers, including UnitedHealth Group, Cigna and CVS, also own some of the largest such companies.

Luigi Mangione was indicted on charges that include first-degree murder in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson earlier this month, the Manhattan District Attorney's Office announced Tuesday. The indictment on murder in the first-degree in furtherance of terrorism elevates the case against Mangione, 26, in Thompson's killing outside a Manhattan hotel on Dec. 4. His Pennsylvania attorney, Thomas Dickey, said Mangione would plead not guilty in the New York and Pennsylvania cases. Karen Friedman Agnifilo has been retained to represent Mangione on the New York charges. All the while, Nvidia has been conspicuously absent from tech's upward move within the Dow, losing 9% since Dec. 5. CNN —Luigi Mangione has been indicted for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Manhattan earlier this month, according to newly released court documents. A Manhattan grand jury indicted Mangione of second-degree murder as a crime of terrorism, according to the indictment. Mangione faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole, if convicted, according to Bragg’s office. The habeas corpus petition is a key factor in whether Mangione can be extradited to New York. In the weeks since Thompson’s killing, officials have seen a “shocking and appalling celebration of cold-blooded murder,” Tisch said on Tuesday.

In the exit polls, about 1 in 8 voters who described Trump as “too extreme” still voted for him. Likewise, in the VoteCast survey, Trump won 1 in 6 voters who expressed concern that he would steer the country in an authoritarian direction. Trump won almost exactly the same share of voters who said in the VoteCast survey that he lacks the moral character to serve as president. Even among the voter groups most directly affected by these policies, Trump won substantial support from people who disagreed with him. In either case, the result was that Trump won far too many voters who supported legal abortion for Harris to prevail.

The family of the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO had reported him missing last month, and his mother told police her son could be the person seen in surveillance photos one day before his arrest, law enforcement sources told NBC News. Mangione’s mother said she last spoke to her son on July 1 and that he had been working in San Francisco, the flyer says. The killing sparked a large manhunt that included the wide distribution of surveillance photos of a person of interest, and a $60,000 reward. After the killing, a San Francisco police officer thought the images of the person of interest had similarities to the image of Mangione from the missing person report, multiple law enforcement officials said. San Francisco police contacted the FBI about the possible identity of the man in that photo, the FBI said.

But on Friday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said he’s seen signs Mangione could soon waive his right to fight extradition. Investigators found a three-page handwritten “claim of responsibility” and writings in a spiral notebook, a law enforcement source briefed on the matter told CNN. If convicted of second-degree murder in New York, Mangione would face 15 years to life in prison. In a notebook passage, he mused what could be better than “to kill the CEO at his own bean counting conference,” a law enforcement official briefed on the matter told CNN. In some of his writings, Mangione referenced pain from a back injury he got in July 2023, Kenny said.

CNN —Luigi Mangione has retained a high-powered New York attorney to represent him as he faces a second-degree murder charge in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, CNN has learned. “She’s got as much experience as any human being, especially in the state court,” one longtime New York prosecutor told CNN. As of Friday, however, there were indications Mangione “may waive” his extradition next week, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Pennsylvania state Judge Dave Consiglio denied Mangione bail on Tuesday related to both state dockets, saying he would remain at the Huntingdon State Correctional Institution. Luigi Mangione is led into the Blair County Courthouse for an extradition hearing December 10, 2024 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

UnitedHealth Group's CEO eulogized his slain colleague, Brian Thompson, in a New York Times op-ed. Thompson's shooting sparked a nationwide debate about the state of the health insurance industry. The head of UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, is responding to the "vitriol" that's been lodged — both on- and offline — against the health insurance industry and its workers. He then condemned the mounting rhetoric that he said has glorified violence against health insurance workers. Others criticized the for-profit health insurance system as a whole, with some acknowledging that businesses are meant to make a profit and others advocating for nonprofit healthcare.

Neither Mangione, nor his mother, were insured by UnitedHealthcare, the nation’s largest private health insurer, a UnitedHealth Group spokesperson told CNN. So that’s possibly why he targeted that company,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said in an interview with NBC New York. Witty said the company’s mission is to help make the health system “work better” and “find ways to deliver high-quality care and lower costs.”“Clearly, we are not there yet,” he said. Investigators also searched the hostel where suspected killer Mangione stayed the night before the shooting and the hotel room where Thompson was staying while in New York. Mangione is being held at the Pennsylvania state correctional institution at Huntingdon, the oldest operating state prison in the state.

Then, when I was riding my bike one day, a car hit me, and I was left with injuries. Although I'd been depressed and lonely at my Long Island high school, going to college at Binghamton University improved my life. I could pay the rent for my one-bedroom apartment, save in a 401(k), and pick up any tab I needed to. Investigators say they have mounting evidence against Luigi Mangione, 26, connecting him to the assassination of Brian Thompson on December 4. Mangione was denied bail on Tuesday and is fighting his extradition to New York, where he faces five charges, including second-degree murder, in Thompson’s killing. If convicted of second-degree murder, Mangione faces at least 15 years to life in prison, while a first-degree murder charge carries a minimum of 20 years to life in prison. A second-degree murder charge – but not first-degree murder – allows the defendant an “affirmative defense,” which is essentially a “Yes, but” argument to lessen the seriousness of the charge to first-degree manslaughter, according to Shapiro. Mangione’s arrest is only the first piece of the case against him, according to Ken Corey, former NYPD chief of department.

Any shifts in the nation’s complex health care system, however, will not come easily, nor quickly, experts say. Policyholders rebelled because they felt they couldn’t access the care they needed, said Larry Levitt, executive vice president for health policy at KFF, a nonprofit health policy research group. “If you think health care costs are rough now, imagine them without constraints,” said Rodney Whitlock, vice president at McDermott+, a health care consulting group, and a former health policy adviser on the Senate Finance Committee under Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa. Health insurers, however, do at times backtrack when faced with intense blowback. However, there is now more bipartisan appetite on Capitol Hill to enact reforms, said Wendell Potter, a former Cigna executive and vocal critic of the health care industry.
