If you want to see into the future of car making, the Formula One rulebook has often been a good place to start. But the sport's new regulations suggest that car makers are not pinning all their hopes on electrification. In 2026, F1 cars will be powered by hybrid engines with a 50:50 split between electric-power and internal combustion; crucially, the combustion engine will be powered by synthetic e-fuels. Another is Audi, which left Formula E in 2021 to join F1 in 2026, the same year that the German automotive company will stop producing new combustion engine cars and only release electric vehicles. One of the products Audi is ramping up is synthetic e-fuels, which use renewably-generated electricity to break water into hydrogen and oxygen before combining them with carbon dioxide.

The trove of investigation documents released Thursday includes a timeline of images from Mohamed Barakat’s apartment and surveillance cameras that map his movements before the July 14 shooting as officers investigated a routine traffic crash. Barakat shot and killed one Fargo police officer and wounded two other officers and a bystander before a fourth officer killed him in an exchange of gunfire. Images taken from video on the night before the shooting show a tactical vest on Barakat's apartment floor, Barakat checking his door while holding a gun and a cellphone, and later assembling a short-barreled shotgun. Much of his subsequent movements involved driving around Fargo, returning several times to his garage and at least twice to his apartment. A fourth officer, Zach Robinson, fired back with a 9 mm handgun, shooting the clip of Barakat's rifle and effectively disabling it.

LONDON (AP) — Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is preparing to water down some of Britain's environmental commitments on Wednesday, saying the country must fight climate change without penalizing workers and consumers. “For too many years, politicians in governments of all stripes have not been honest about costs and trade-offs," Sunak said. Aug 31 (Reuters) - Britain's car production rose for the sixth consecutive month in July as automakers continued to recover from global chip shortages, an industry body said on Thursday. "Six months of growth shows that British car production is recovering and, with electrified models increasingly driving volumes, the future is more positive," said SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes. The total number of cars produced, however, remained 29.4% lower from the pre-pandemic levels seen in July 2019. The UK's car industry, a significant driver of manufacturing and exports, got a boost last month when India's Tata Motors (TAMO.NS) committed to build a major EV battery plant in Britain to supply its Jaguar Land Rover factories. SMMT had said in July it could take five more years for Britain to return to producing 1 million or more cars a year.

The new plant is expected to be built in Somerset, south-west England, while Jaguar Land Rover's UK factories are based near Birmingham, central England. With an initial output of 40 gigawatt hours, Britain said the factory would provide almost half of the battery production needed by 2030.
