Lawmakers in more than a half-dozen U.S. states are pushing laws to define antisemitism, triggering debates about free speech and bringing complicated world politics into statehouses. Bill supporters say that more than 30 states have adopted the definition in some way over the years. Since the Israel-Hamas war erupted, several states have passed resolutions condemning Hamas and voicing support for Israel. Some protesters gathered in the capitol in Indiana this month before the House unanimously advanced a bill incorporating the definition there. How colleges are acting to prevent or stop antisemitism on campus has become a hot-button issue across the country.

Deep-sea mining companies have set their sights on these minerals, aiming to use them in batteries and electronics. Environmentalists warn that the mining process and the plumes of sediment it would dump back into the sea could affect marine life. A series of shipboard experiments on jellyfish in the Norwegian fjords, published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, offer insights into those warnings. The scientists approximated the effects of mining by pumping sediment into the jellies’ tanks, essentially asking how the animals would cope with the muddy water. The researchers selected helmet jellyfish as their research subjects because of the ubiquity and hardiness of the dinner-plate-size creatures.

The suit - against DeSantis, a 2024 Republican presidential hopeful, and several state university system officials - seeks a preliminary injunction to a state order blocking SJP from receiving school funds and using campus facilities. At least two Florida universities - the University of Florida and the University of South Florida - have SJP chapters. Brandeis University has also banned SJP indefinitely, and Columbia University and George Washington University have suspended the group. The schools have cited the national organization's support for the Hamas attack and said their campus chapters violated school policies. Brian Hauss, senior staff attorney with the ACLU Speech, Privacy and Technology project and counsel in the case, said the student plaintiffs in the state university system were victims of "guilt by association" in this case.

☆ Volkswagen shares recover after EV production cut reports

June 28 (Reuters) - Shares in Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) inched higher on Wednesday, recovering slightly from a selloff the day before when the automaker played down reports it will cut EV output in Germany over the next two weeks because of lower than expected demand. Volkswagen "expects the trend in BEV (battery electric vehicle) orders, which already improved in May, to gradually stabilise in the coming months," spokesperson Christopher Hauss told Reuters. Following reports by news agency dpa-AFX of a production cut, Volkswagen shares fell 2% on Tuesday. However, some analysts said the reported production cut indicates the European EV market is not growing fast enough to support all the new EV models and planned extra capacity. "Our EV forecasts for Ford (F.N) and GM (GM.N) are a fraction of management targets by mid-decade", analysts at the investment bank say.
