CNBC asked artists to name their top New York galleries, ranging from the well-known to the underground. London-based screen-printing artist Diego Arellano likes Manhattan's Chelsea galleries for their large rooms and high ceilings. People who have used Cash App accounts may be entitled to receive up to $2,500 each as part of a $15 million settlement related to a data breach involving the popular payments and investment platform, according to court documents and the company. The exposure of sensitive information for more than eight million users of Cash App Investing was revealed in a regulatory filing in 2022 by Block, its parent company. The data was exposed when a former employee downloaded corporate reports after leaving the company, according to the filing. A second breach involving more customers took place in 2023 with Cash App’s person-to-person payment services after the defendants failed to take security measures, according to a consolidated class-action complaint filed in February in United States District Court for the Northern District of California. It said that Block and Cash App were negligent in allowing unauthorized access to personal identification information, and that they mishandled complaints about the breaches and fraudulent transactions.

Florida prepares for potential damage. With heavy rainfall of up to 12 inches expected over the next seven days, Florida is bracing for the threat of flooding, along with gusty winds and erosion. Just after 11 a.m. on Friday, the National Weather Service issued a tropical storm warning, meaning tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours, for the southwest coast of the Florida peninsula, from East Cape Sable to Bonita Beach. Other areas of the southern and western coasts of the peninsula, as well as parts of the Florida Keys, were under a tropical storm watch, forecasters said. The governor’s order covers Orange County and Osceola County, and travel could be disrupted for the throngs of summer visitors who go to Orlando and the theme parks at Universal Studios Florida and Walt Disney World.

If the prospect of sharks lurking just off the beach wasn’t frightening enough, researchers in Brazil have discovered a new reason to be unnerved: Some of them have cocaine in their system. In a study published last week, researchers tested 13 sharks off the coast of Rio de Janeiro and found that all had traces of cocaine in their liver and muscle tissues. The levels of cocaine found in these sharks were reported to be as much as 100 times higher than in previously observed marine life. It’s the first time this data has ever been found for any top predator.”This was the first study to analyze cocaine in sharks, following various studies on smaller species, including mollusks, crustaceans and even eels. All 13 sharks examined were found to have unfiltered cocaine in much higher concentrations than in previous studies on other animals, indicating chronic exposure to the drug.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said on Tuesday that his department had opened an investigation into Delta Air Lines after the tech outage last week disrupted flights worldwide, and the agency wanted to hear from travelers who said that the airline had not complied with passenger protection requirements. The aim of the investigation is to “ensure the airline is following the law and taking care of its passengers during continued widespread disruptions,” Mr. Buttigieg said in a statement. “All airline passengers have the right to be treated fairly,” he added. The Transportation Department has consumer protection requirements that cover lost baggage, lengthy tarmac delays, compensation for being bumped from an overbooked flight and other protections.

CNN —Sharks living off the coast of Brazil have tested positive for cocaine, according to new research, the first time that the drug has been detected in free-ranging sharks. Cocaine levels were around three times higher in muscle tissue than liver tissue, according to the study, while female sharks had higher cocaine concentrations in muscle tissue compared to males. Cocaine consumption has risen massively around the world in recent decades, according to the study. Increased consumption and poor sewage treatment infrastructure has made for increased cocaine levels in the sea, say researchers. Hauser Davis said that it is “very likely” that crustaceans, fish and other animals that the sharks prey on are also contaminated with cocaine.

Eva Hesse, the German American artist, wanted her work to look “ucky,” and accordingly, many of her sculptures can make your skin crawl. They behave like skin themselves: irregular in texture, their craggy folds suggesting, unnervingly, something alive. Hesse, a post-Minimalist of the 1960s (she died in 1970), dismantled the ideological scaffolding holding up what was considered art, often by reimagining industrial, non-art materials. They spread across the floor and crept up walls, unruly and impolite, like little else art had seen before. They’re given ample breathing room across the gallery’s ground floor, cool and low-lit, which gives a revenant, sepulchral flavor.

A dangerous heat wave is expected to affect parts of the Pacific Northwest over the weekend in a region where authorities are still addressing the deadly impact of record-breaking temperatures in 2021. The Weather Service said on Friday that the heat is expected to intensify over the interior Pacific Northwest, possibly reaching as high as 110 degrees Fahrenheit in some locations. In Spokane Valley, Wash., the heat index could reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit on Sunday before a slight dip in the following days. “The average for this time of year is around 83 to 84 degrees,” said Hannah Chandler-Cooley, a Weather Service meteorologist. We have been above average since our heat wave early this month.”
