CNN —A Russian-controlled segment of the International Space Station is leaking, allowing pressure and air to bleed out. The situation has reached a fever pitch as cosmonauts scramble to patch problem areas and officials from Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, and NASA disagree about the severity of the problem. Nonetheless, Trump told his advisers that he would claim victory before the ballots were fully counted, prosecutors say. One private political adviser, three days before Election Day 2020, described Trump’s plan as: “He’s going to declare victory. When Trump told the staffer he would not pay the private lawyer spearheading his legal challenges unless the challenges were successful, the staffer told Trump that the private attorney would never be paid. The person is described as White House deputy chief of staff. Therefore, even if some of Trump’s alleged wrongdoing occurred on White House grounds and in front of White House staff, he doesn’t have immunity because that fell under the “political” umbrella, Smith’s team wrote.

Elon Musk near a Falcon 9 rocket at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California in 2018. SpaceXSo much of the way SpaceX operates, as you tell it in the book, is Elon Musk's hands-on management and the way he pushes his workers. I don't think Elon does very well in those types of environments. I don't really understand the entire arc of his changing political views over the last decade. I don't think the regular person really understands what a technological leap Starship is.

CNN —Scientists have discovered a new species of ghost shark that lives in deep ocean waters near Australia and New Zealand. A deep water animal, the ghost shark is scientifically known as chimaera and is closely related to sharks and rays. “Ghost sharks like this one are largely confined to the ocean floor, living in depths of up to 2,600m (8,530 feet). The ghost shark was found at a depth of around 1,200 meters (about 3,900 feet) on the Chatham Rise. “We don’t actually know a lot about ghost sharks,” Finucci told CNN at the time.

Days after returning to Earth, the four civilian crew members of the Polaris Dawn mission opened up about their experience seeing the planet from orbit, floating in weightlessness and conducting the world’s first all-civilian spacewalk. “The perfection of what you’re looking at is just awe-inspiring,” Poteet said, recalling the views of sunrises and sunsets out the window of their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule. The crew spent two-and-a-half years training for the Polaris Dawn mission, which included choreographing and rehearsing each step of the spacewalk. (The crew members also raised money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during their time in orbit.) He said the larger goal for both SpaceX and the Polaris program is to eventually make humans a multiplanetary species.

Alistair Berg | Digitalvision | Getty ImagesPlanning to work longer is a popular escape hatch for Americans who feel they've saved too little to support themselves in old age. About 27% of workers intend to work in retirement because they need to supplement their income, according to a new CNBC and SurveyMonkey survey. While working longer is among the best ways to shore up one's nest egg, the plan may backfire, according to retirement experts. If workers lose those wages, they'd have to figure out another way to make their retirement savings last. There are benefits to working longerWorking longer — for those who can do it — is a financial boon, according to retirement experts.

Read previewSpaceX's Polaris Dawn crew successfully returned to Earth on Sunday, bringing Elon Musk one step closer to his dream of settling Mars. They donned new SpaceX spacesuits that had never been tested in orbit, opened their ship to the vacuum of space, and conducted the first-ever commercial spacewalk. On top of that, they exposed themselves to high levels of space radiation, much higher than what astronauts aboard the International Space Station undergo in the same time period. People traveling to Mars would be exposed to immense amounts of space radiation for months. So the Crew Dragon spacecraft flew through two donuts of intense radiation surrounding Earth, called the Van Allen belts.

The Crew Dragon capsule carrying four astronauts is on track to land off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida, at 3:36 a.m. Already, the Polaris Dawn mission has made history as it reached a higher altitude than any human has traveled in five decades. To safely reach home, the Crew Dragon capsule will carry out what’s called a “de-orbit burn,” orienting itself as it prepares to slice through the thickest part of Earth’s atmosphere. Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the Crew Dragon capsule's hatch on Thursday during the first commercial spacewalk. Sunday’s anticipated return will mark the conclusion of the third trip to space for the specific Crew Dragon capsule powering the Polaris Dawn mission.

Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule during the first commercial spacewalk on Thursday. But other chapters, like those describing the loss of our ancient ancestors, are harder to recover as time passes. A chance finding of bones in a cave is revealing clues of a much older tragic mystery. The once-in-a-lifetime find, nicknamed Thorin after a character in “The Hobbit,” has puzzled researchers for nearly a decade. The overall winner of the competition was photographer Ryan Imperio for his photo taken during the October 2023 annular solar eclipse. The phenomenon is visible for brief moments during an eclipse when sunlight shines through the moon’s valleys and craters, creating glowing drops of light.

CNN —SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission kicked off early Tuesday, launching a four-person crew of civilian astronauts into orbit. The company confirmed that the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft carrying the crew reached its peak altitude of 1,400.7 kilometers (870 miles) at 9:19 p.m. The Polaris Dawn mission also marks the farthest any human has journeyed since the final Apollo mission in 1972 — and the farthest into space a woman has ever traveled. The pre-breathe protocol the Polaris Dawn crew is undergoing is entirely unlike what is carried out on the International Space Station. In this screenshot from video, the Polaris Dawn crew sit in the Dragon capsule shortly after launching towards space on Tuesday.

The mission, dubbed Polaris Dawn, was set to take flight as soon as 3:38 a.m. This launch attempt comes after several issues hampered the Polaris Dawn crew’s efforts to get off the ground in late August. Because carrying out a spacewalk will create a drain on oxygen supplies, the Polaris Dawn mission will have only enough life support for five or six days in space. If successful, Polaris Dawn would beat that record by about 20 miles (32 kilometers). Polaris Dawn may also mark the farthest any woman has ever gone into space.

The test flight was originally intended to last about nine days. The decision to bring Starliner back from the ISS empty marks a dramatic about-face for NASA and Boeing, as the organizations were previously adamant that the capsule was the primary choice for returning the crew. But Starliner's crew flight test, which had been seen as the final major milestone in the spacecraft's development, faced problems — most notably with its propulsion system. "Boeing has worked very hard with NASA to get the necessary data to make this decision," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said during a press conference with top NASA officials at Johnson Space Center in Houston on Saturday. NASA will now conduct another phase of its Flight Readiness Review to determine when to bring the empty Starliner home.
