Netflix's cheaper, ad-supported tier has reached 70 million global monthly active users two years after it was launched. The company said Tuesday more than 50% of its new sign-ups are for ad-supported plans in countries that offer the option. When Netflix launched its ad platform two years ago, the company said Nielsen would rate its content. Netflix offered its last update on its ad-supported tier in May, when it said it reached 40 million global monthly active users, nearly doubling the figure it had shared in January. Netflix also announced in May it would launch its own advertising platform, ending a partnership with Microsoft for that technology.

“Too frequently, large grocery companies use their significant market power to hike prices for essential goods and take advantage of customers,” the letter said. Grocery prices shot up 20% between January 2021 and December 2022, causing some consumers to cut back on common purchases like red meat and eggs. But inflation is now virtually back to normal; since November 2023, grocery prices have been increasing by less than 2% on an annual basis. The companies say the tags let employees change prices up to every 10 seconds, allowing them to streamline operations and restock faster. Kroger has denied that claim, saying electronic pricing would only be used to lower prices whenever possible.

☆ YouTube announces AI features from Google DeepMind for Shorts creators

YouTube on Wednesday announced artificial-intelligence features for creators on its Shorts platform that tap into Google 's DeepMind video-generation model. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said he hopes Veo will enable creators to produce more Shorts videos with the help of AI. The Veo AI backgrounds are an upgrade over a similar AI-generation feature announced by YouTube in 2023 called Dream Screen. The company said its Veo AI background feature will roll out later this year while the six-second AI clips will become available in 2025. However, some creators expressed concerns that their videos on YouTube are used to train the AI models that built Veo.

CNN —India’s second nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarine joined its naval fleet late last month, a move the government says strengthens its nuclear deterrent as New Delhi casts a wary eye at both China and Pakistan. The de facto border between India and China, known as the Line of Actual Control, has been a longtime flashpoint between the two. India’s next ballistic missile subs could be years away, however, if history is any predictor of the future. Arighaat was launched almost seven years ago, and if that timeline from launch to commissioning applies to the next Indian ballistic missile sub, it won’t join the service until 2030.
