Thousands of people have fled the Syrian city of Homs as rebel fighters pushed further south with their rapid assault on government forces, a leading monitoring group said. If the strategically important municipality were to fall, it would leave three of the country’s five largest cities in the hands of the forces led by the militant group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and no major cities between rebel forces and the Syrian capital of Damascus. In less than two weeks they have already captured the second city of Aleppo in the north, as well as the central city of Hama — where government forces were forced out Thursday. “Our forces continue to advance towards the city of Homs at a steady pace, thanks to God, after the arrival of convoys carrying hundreds of displaced people from Homs to deter Assad’s aggression against their city,” said Hassan Abdul-Ghani, senior commander of the HTS-led forces on Friday in a post on X. With his forces nearing, thousands of people had fled towards western coastal regions, a stronghold of the government where fighting has remained less fierce than in other parts of the country, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Friday.

Military reinforcements being moved from Idlib to control Hama, Syria on Wednesday. The taking the city of Hama by HTS-led forces could prove pivotal in shifting the balance of the civil war. One feature of the battle for Hama — and the broader Syrian civil war — has been fierce aerial attacks from government forces. The air superiority of Assad’s forces — which have long received heavy backing from Russia and Iran — was on display Thursday before government forces left Hama.

CNN —Syria’s army said it is withdrawing from Hama, a symbolic and strategically important central city, marking a second major gain for a newly formed rebel coalition that also captured Aleppo last week. Rebels had been unable to capture the city since the Syrian civil war began in 2011. The rebels vowed to advance further south, to the city of Homs, another major city about 165 kilometers (100 miles) from the capital Damascus. Syria’s civil war began during the 2011 Arab Spring as the government suppressed an uprising against Assad, who has been president since 2000. The country plunged into a full-scale civil war as the protests turned into an armed rebellion.

Syrian rebel forces were on Wednesday within six miles of the central city of Hama, a city freighted with past horrors for antigovernment forces. Syria’s fourth-largest city might represent an even more significant fillip than the sudden capture last week of Aleppo — the country’s most populous city — in the war’s most significant offensive in years. Despite the map of Syria having been repeatedly redrawn since 2011, Hama has never been in rebel hands. Insurgents and Turkey-backed fighters opposed to the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad were under 10 miles from the city, according to the Associated Press. Lt. Col. Hassan Abdul-Ghani, a senior rebel commander, denied government claims that they his fighters near the city had been repelled.

CNN —Syrian armed rebels have entered Aleppo just three days into their surprise offensive, marking the first time they have set foot in the country’s second largest city since government forces recaptured the city in 2016. Rebel forces launched a surprise attack this week, sweeping through several villages outside the city and reigniting conflict that had been largely static for years. “Our forces have begun entering the city of Aleppo,” said the newly formed rebel coalition, the Military Operations Command. Earlier Friday, the rebel group said it seized control of the Syrian government’s Military Scientific Research Center on the outskirts of Aleppo city after “intense clashes with the regime forces and Iranian militias.” It later shared a video of Syrian regime tanks leaving Aleppo as rebel forces advanced. On Friday, the armed rebel groups claimed to have entered the city, which has been under government control since 2016. The Syrian military said it’s “confronting terrorist organizations” and claimed to have inflicted “heavy losses” on the groups since Wednesday. Wednesday’s surprise operation marks the first significant conflagration between Syrian rebels and the regime since March 2020, when Russia and Turkey mediated a ceasefire in the north of the country. The militant group, which was credited for helping save the Assad regime from Syrian rebels, is now significantly weakened, with most of its leaders assassinated. Iran’s proxy Hezbollah has been instrumental in assisting Assad regain territory lost to militias and rebel groups.

CNN —Huge protests across Bangladesh escalated into deadly violence this week with clashes between students, pro-government supporters and armed police fueling widespread anger over civil service job quotas opponents say are discriminatory. Many Bangladeshi students are demanding an end to the government’s quota system, which reserves more than half of civil service posts for certain groups. In 2018, the quota system was scrapped following similar protests but in June the High Court reinstated it, ruling its removal was unconstitutional. Critics and protesters say the quota system creates a two-tier Bangladesh where a politically connected elite benefit by their birth. “This is not just about quota protests anymore, this is much bigger than that, in simple quota protests the government wouldn’t go around hurting and shooting students.
