Despite a difficult quarter, McDonald’s looks resilient in the face of various pressures, analysts say — something the company shares with U.S. consumers overall. “The spotlight is always on McDonald’s because it’s so big” and something of a “bellwether,” she said. Starbucks tapped Niccol as its latest chief executive and chair on Tuesday. Niccol replaces Laxman Narasimhan, who took over the top job in March 2023 after being handpicked by former CEO Schultz. Other analysts wrote glowingly of Niccol, seeing him as the right person to tackle Starbucks' sluggish sales. Some analysts believe that having Niccol, an experienced restaurant CEO, in the driver's seat could mean that Schultz finally moves on.

Third-party food delivery is becoming the norm for American consumers, as delivery apps like Grubhub, DoorDash and Uber Eats take hold in day-to-day dining. It's also presenting customers and restaurants with an increasingly complicated equation of service fees, delivery costs and worker tips. San Francisco resident Zainab Batool, who said she orders delivery from either Uber Eats or DoorDash weekly, called the added fees "insane." The share of consumers choosing third-party delivery services over direct restaurant delivery is rising, up from 15% in 2020 to 21% in 2024, according to Technomic's 2024 Delivery & Takeout Consumer Trend Report. But using their delivery services instead of paying for in-house delivery is worth it for a business on the smaller side, he said.

A wildfire that erupted in the mountains of Santa Barbara County in Southern California has burned more than 16,000 acres, prompting an evacuation order and threatening ranches, including Michael Jackson’s former Neverland Ranch, the authorities said. The fire, called the Lake Fire, broke out shortly before 4 p.m. on Friday near Zaca Lake, just northeast of Los Olivos, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The cause of the fire, which was zero percent contained as of Sunday, remained under investigation. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office issued an evacuation order for an area near the Los Padres National Forest that includes the property once known as Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, a 2,700-acre property in Los Olivos, about 150 miles northwest of Los Angeles. About 100 residents were affected by the evacuation order, said Kenichi Haskett, a public information officer for Cal Fire.

Chewy shares started swinging wildly after online personality Roaring Kitty revealed a big stake , but Wall Street analysts believe being branded as a meme stock is not good for the pet retailer. The meme stock leader, whose legal name is Keith Gill, has taken a 6.6% stake in Chewy, making him the third-largest shareholder. An initial boost in the share price — it surged 18% in two days early last week — has quickly faded, with shares falling more than 5% Monday. Many believe BC could use any rally in Chewy stock to sell more of its stake, putting a temporary ceiling on the shares. The dynamic could be at play Monday as Chewy's stock opened 9% higher, only to quickly give up all the gains and turn lower.
