Future Coalition PAC has spent nearly $60,000 running several YouTube ads targeting Michigan, according to Google’s Ads Transparency Center. Each of the ads emphatically states Harris’ support for Israel, and many pointedly highlight her husband, Doug Emhoff, who is Jewish. “Kamala Harris is a strong leader for these difficult times. Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff: making history, standing up for what’s right, supporting Israel.”Another one of the ads opens, “Vice President Harris has chosen a side, the right side. CNN —Nearly half of all renter households in the US were cost-burdened in 2023, meaning they paid more than 30% of their income towards housing costs, according to new government data. “Housing costs rose between 2022 and 2023 for both homeowners and renters,” Molly Ross, a survey statistician at the Census Bureau, said in a statement. Households that spend more than 30% of their income on rent, mortgage payments or other housing costs are considered “cost-burdened” by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. In 2023, 56.2% of Black or African American households spent more than 30% of their income on housing costs, compared to 49.7% of the total population. About 2.5 million, or 30.6%, of Black households were considered “severely cost-burdened,” meaning they spent more than 50% of their income on housing costs in 2023.

What to watch during the Trump, Harris debate on ABC

Here are six things to watch for on Tuesday night:Will Harris deliver the policy message voters say they want to hear? More than her convention speech, the debate will provide a platform for Harris to answer some of those questions. This image shared by ABC News shows the stage in Philadelphia ahead of the debate between Harris and Trump. Rebecca Wright/CNNWhen Harris sticks by Biden’s policies, Trump attacks them and her as a failure. What’s not up for debate is that Biden, though absent in person, figures to be a prominent figure on the debate stage.

In a follow-up post, Vance said, “In short, don’t let the crybabies in the media dissuade you, fellow patriots. Keep the cat memes flowing.”Vance promoted false claims on Monday that Haitian migrants in Ohio are killing and eating family pets, though his post on Tuesday made no mention of Haitians “eating” them. Tim Walz touted Vice President Kamala Harris’ record of defending LGBTQ rights on Saturday night, pledging to a supportive crowd that she will advance their cause if elected president. He noted how Harris worked alongside President Joe Biden to issue executive orders protecting the rights of LGBTQ people in health care, the military and education. The organization also applauded her selection of Walz as her running mate, citing his own long record of supporting LGBTQ youth and backing same-sex marriage. Transgender youth rarely undergo gender-confirmation surgery anywhere. “President Trump will ensure all Americans are treated equally under the law regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation,” Leavitt said.

Washington CNN —Vice President Kamala Harris has met more than 150 world leaders since becoming vice president. Still, Harris has not always been the first phone call for foreign leaders or officials looking to get a line into the White House. UkraineA month after Russia invaded Ukraine, Harris was dispatched to NATO’s eastern flank on a reassurance mission – one that also came with some sensitive diplomatic smoothing-over. For a foreign policy novice with aspirations for higher office, the war in Ukraine was a rigorous introduction to wartime diplomacy. She has vowed to continue to support Ukraine and impose costs on Russia,” an aide to the vice president said.

The addition of Gabbard is particularly notable given the tense exchanges she had with the vice president during their 2020 race that left Harris rattled. Trump’s team has been sketching out potential responses on reproductive rights with the expectation Harris will make that a focus during the debate. The Trump campaign has insisted the matter is settled. Thus far, no one is expected to sit in for Harris, just as no one played Biden ahead of the June debate. It’s the second time the vice president will visit the city this week after campaigning with Biden on Labor Day.

The “care economy” — a broad set of policies aimed at helping parents and other caregivers — was the great unfinished work of President Biden’s domestic agenda. Vice President Kamala Harris has made it a central aspect of her campaign to succeed him. Ms. Harris, the Democratic nominee, has spoken frequently on the campaign trail about making it more affordable to raise children. She also laid out policies that aim to reduce housing costs, such as providing up to $25,000 in down-payment assistance to first-time home buyers. In her speech accepting the Democratic nomination on Thursday, Ms. Harris said she would not let conservatives end programs like Head Start that “provide preschool and child care for our children.”

But with Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate, she said, “I feel like politics have been a dream.”Sierra Sanson, 23, of Medford, N.J., planned to vote for Jill Stein of the Green Party, or not at all. Now she’s thrilled to support Ms. Harris: “She’s a badass woman who I want to see succeed.”Emily Baumel, 27, of Madison, Wis., hadn’t planned to vote for president, but will now vote for Ms. Harris: “I have a lot less dread; I like how much hope she’s giving people.”Vice President Harris’s candidacy has reinvigorated many Democrats and independents — and particularly young women. Their newfound enthusiasm is evident in interviews, and in early signals from polls in swing states and nationwide.

They still wear suffragist-white outfits and cheer on the prospect of “Madam President.”But eight years after Hillary Clinton became the first woman to lead a major party’s presidential ticket, Democrats are sending American women a more sober and urgent message even as they try to elect another barrier-breaking candidate. Republican policies, they argue, have had disastrous and once-unthinkable consequences for the health and autonomy of women and their families since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. A second term for former President Donald J. Trump, they warn, would be even more dangerous. “Simply put,” Vice President Kamala Harris said this week from the stage of her party’s convention, “they are out of their minds.”

The Donor Report Card on Harris

Donors weigh in on the D.N.C. “I will bring together labor and workers and small-business owners and entrepreneurs and American companies to create jobs,” she told the Democratic National Convention last night. The nod to corporate America comes as Democrats try to firm up relations with big business. DealBook has been hitting the phones all week to hear what donors thought of the four-day convention. A flood of donors decided to go only after Harris became the presumptive nominee.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign for president is entering a new phase, shifting from a 33-day sprint to the convention to something more familiar: Preparing for a debate and pivoting to getting out the vote. On Friday afternoon, Ms. Harris plans to fly back from Chicago to Washington, where she will spend the weekend decompressing from the mind-spinning turn of events that led to her accepting the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday night. She will begin preparing for what will be her first national interview — which she has said will take place by the end of August — and for the Sept. 10 debate with Donald J. Trump, according to campaign officials briefed on her plans who were not authorized to reveal them before they are formally announced. The officials said Ms. Harris will return to the campaign trail next week with events in multiple battleground states, where she will aim to extend the enthusiasm generated at this week’s convention in Chicago.

Some wealthy Harris backers have called for Khan’s replacement, including the LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, who donated $10 million to a Democratic super PAC this year. Because Harris’s economic views seemed fuzzy and her ties to Silicon Valley are strong, some on the left worried she might give in to the pressure. Wes Moore of Maryland, a close ally of the vice president, was asked on CNBC about jettisoning Khan, and suggested that Harris might break from President Biden’s aggressive approach to antitrust. “There are going to be different dynamics that are going to require different philosophies,” said Moore. As the broad outlines of Harris’s economic approach have emerged over the last week, it seems at least as populist as Biden’s.

It all left Democrats on the convention floor feeling euphoric and focused, confident that her speech would spur the Democratic base to turn out in November. But outside the arena, and outside the bubble of ride-or-die Democratic voters, some voters, particularly Republicans, said they did not even bother to watch the speech. And among some still on the fence — those who could make a difference in a tight contest — Ms. Harris’s words did not make immediate converts. Bob and Sharon Reed watched Ms. Harris’s speech on their farm in the hills of central Pennsylvania. They came away from Ms. Harris’s speech feeling a little conflicted.

Why Kamala Harris’s Centrism is Working
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( David Leonhardt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Kamala Harris capped her first month as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate with a roughly 35-minute convention speech last night that embodied her aggressive efforts to win over swing voters. It was a patriotic speech that was hawkish on foreign policy and border security. She described the United States as the greatest country in the world — a view many Americans hold but most Democratic voters do not — and she ended by saying that being an American was “the greatest privilege on earth.” She promised to confront China, Russia, Iran and Iran-backed terrorists and to make sure that the U.S. military remained the “most lethal fighting force in the world.”She also offered a series of populist promises to help the middle class by reducing the cost of housing and health care — policies that many independents and some Republicans favor. And she spent little if any time on subjects that inspire passion among Democrats but are either secondary or off-putting to many swing voters, such as student debt forgiveness and President Biden’s climate agenda. You can read more about Harris’s speech in this news story, as well as in this article on how she contrasted herself with Donald Trump.
