Economists said U.S. employers are likely to continue adding jobs this year, but at a much slower pace. Photo: Eric Thayer/Bloomberg NewsThe good news is the probability of a recession is down sharply, according to The Wall Street Journal’s latest survey of economists. The bad news is that, for a lot of people, it is still going to feel like a recession. Business and academic economists surveyed by the Journal lowered the probability of a recession within the next year, to 39% from 48% in the October survey.

Photo: Cheney Orr for The Wall Street JournalAs Iowa gears up to host the first 2024 Republican presidential nominating contest on Jan. 15, the state’s economy is growing but at a slower pace than most of the country. Home to 3.2 million people, the Hawkeye State is nearly 90% white and just under a third of its residents are college-educated. A smaller share of people in Iowa live in poverty than the U.S. average, 11% compared with 12.6% nationwide. The state’s economy depends on the retail, agriculture and manufacturing industries.

Nolan Cheung, who is autistic, got a job at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital last year after participating in an employment program. Photo: Cincinnati Children’sSamantha Sauer said she landed her first full-time job at age 32, after a decade of being unable to find such work because of a medical condition requiring regular, time-consuming medical treatments. Then in 2022, she got a full-time remote job answering telephone calls from people seeking help from Patients Rising, a private group that provides resources and advocacy for people living with chronic illnesses. The position allows her to work “without having to sacrifice my health for my job or my job for my health,” said Sauer, who lives in New York.

The United Auto Workers union said it reached a tentative deal with General Motors on Monday, more than six weeks after workers went on strike. The company is the last of the three Detroit automakers to reach a new tentative labor deal. Photo: Rebecca Cook/ReutersThe city that has been home to Jeep since World War II largely shrugged off a six-week strike that mothballed a hulking factory with thousands of workers. Jeep-maker Stellantis ’s Toledo, Ohio, assembly plant was one of the first to face walkouts when the United Auto Workers strike against that company, Ford Motor and General Motors started on Sept. 15.

Moderately higher inflation in September would keep Fed officials on track to hold interest rates steady at its Oct. 31-Nov. 1 policy meeting. They are closely watching underlying price trends to gauge whether they have raised short-term interest rates enough to slow the economy and tame inflation. The Fed over the past 20 months has raised interest rates at the fastest pace in four decades. The Fed last raised rates in July, lifting its benchmark federal-funds rate to a range between 5.25% and 5.5%, a 22-year high. Has recent inflation progress stalled?

But inflation has improved enough recently for Federal Reserve officials to hold interest rates steady at their meeting next week. The personal-consumption expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, rose 0.4% in September from the prior month, the same pace as in August, the Commerce Department said Friday. So-called core prices, which exclude volatile food and energy categories, increased 0.3% in September, compared with a 0.1% rise in August.
