By then, Mr. Putin himself had laid out a similar view of territorial disintegration. The United States is confidently, firmly marching down the same path as the Soviet Union.” This still seems to represent Mr. Putin’s fundamental assessment of the country. This year, high-ranking Russian officials eagerly watched the American film “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst. “Hollywood,” he remarked on his Telegram channel, “doesn’t make films about it for no reason.”How would such conflict come about? “Ordinary citizens won’t lift a finger to preserve America’s unity, knowing they mean nothing to their own government.

CNN —The elusive deep-water oarfish – considered to be a harbinger of bad news – was spotted yet again on the shores of Encinitas, California. “We took samples and froze the specimen awaiting further study and final preservation in the Marine Vertebrate Collection,” Ben Frable, manager of the Scripps Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection, said in the post. “Like with the previous oarfish, this specimen and the samples taken from it will be able to tell us much about the biology, anatomy, genomics and life history of oarfish,” Frable said in the post. The fish was found in good condition according to the release, and it was taken in for examination and preservation to become a part of the organization’s Marine Vertebrate Collection. “It may have to do with changes in ocean conditions and increased numbers of oarfish off our coast,” Frable said.

The legendary “doom fish” has returned to California. A long, ribbon-shaped oarfish, rarely seen and believed to signal disaster, has washed up on California’s shores for the second time this year. PhD candidate Alison Laferriere from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego discovered the nearly 10-foot-long oarfish on a beach in Encinitas, in southern California, last week. According to the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, oarfish are incredibly rare. Since 1901, only 21 oarfish have been documented washing up on California shores, according to the institution.

Barnes & Noble is making a comeback

In a move that’s perhaps more symbolic than business-minded, Barnes & Noble, America’s largest retail bookseller, has reclaimed the flagship store it vacated in 2013. But Barnes & Noble would revamp its business model. “The problem with Barnes & Noble when I took it over was that the bookstores themselves weren’t very good,” Daunt told CNN. Foot traffic data for Barnes & Noble show that visits are up by 7% since 2019, according to location analytics company Placer.ai. Shannon DeVito, head of books at Barnes & Noble, says that beyond reigniting a love for reading, the BookTok trend has guided stores on what to stock.

The CBOE Volatility Index , known on Wall Street as the VIX, helps traders track when a market rally is actually unhealthy, said DataTrek co-founder Nicholas Colas. Monday's close for the VIX around 15 "is a healthy sign" for the temperature of the market as it advances, Colas wrote to clients. To put it succinctly: "Rallies built on an elevated VIX signal a bubble," he wrote. That's a lesson market participants learned, during the dot-com bubble of the mid- to late-1990s, he said. In the current bull market, dating back to the fourth quarter of 2022, however, the VIX has been largely "well behaved," Colas argued.

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome Powell holds a press conference following a two-day meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee on interest rate policy in Washington, U.S., September 18, 2024. REUTERS/Tom BrennerFalling interest rates are usually good news for banks, especially when the cuts aren't a harbinger of recession. That's because lower rates will slow the migration of money that's happened over the past two years as customers shifted cash out of checking accounts and into higher-yielding options like CDs and money market funds. When the Federal Reserve cut its benchmark rate by half a percentage point last month, it signaled a turning point in its stewardship of the economy and telegraphed its intention to cut rates by another two full percentage points, according to the central bank's projections, boosting prospects for banks. The bank is expected to report $4.01 per share in earnings, a 7.4% drop from the year-earlier period.

Paris CNN —A large French alpine ski resort faced with declining snowfalls is to close after it failed to find funds to turn its pistes into year-round attractions. ‘No prospect’Council President Coraline Saurat said that some 2.8 million euros [$3.07 million] have been invested into transforming the area into a year-round resort since 2017. She said that with winter snow increasingly unreliable, completing the final years of the project was too much of a risk. “The impact of committing to two more years was considerable with no prospect for the future,” she said, speaking to France Bleu on Saturday. On Sunday, the Grand Puy station in France’s Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region was also permanently closed after a public referendum.

In a fact-bending blast of disinformation, the former president is charging Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden’s White House of the very transgressions of which he stands accused. This is false, but Trump, while president, did repurpose FEMA funds to help finance his hardline immigration policies. But in retrospect, the charade featuring his first White House press secretary Sean Spicer was a harbinger of an administration that bucked fact as an instrument of political power. Trump voters respond to his populism and his evisceration of elites and many sincerely believe he’s a response to a march to the left by the Democratic Party. Both Trump and Harris, who are deadlocked in the polls, are chasing voters who may not habitually follow politics.

The funds target distributions equal to six times the dividend payouts on the Nasdaq-100 Index and four times the S & P 500 dividend, respectively. The idea behind the Pacer funds is that the funds will capture more of that upside during market rallies, according to Sean O'Hara, president at Pacer ETF Distributors. The QDPL's website currently shows a distribution yield of 5.79%, or more than four-times the roughly 1.3% dividend yield on the S & P 500, according to YCharts.com. “There’s only one explanation for this staggering difference in maternal mortality,” said Nancy L. Cohen, president of the GEPI. “All the research points to Texas’ abortion ban as the primary driver of this alarming increase.”“Texas, I fear, is a harbinger of what’s to come in other states,” she said. Among Hispanic women, the rate of women dying while pregnant, during childbirth or soon after increased from 14.5% in 2019 to 18.9% in 2022. While maternal mortality spiked overall during the pandemic, women dying while pregnant or during childbirth rose consistently in Texas following the state’s ban on abortion, according to the Gender Equity Policy Institute. Tatum, who was not involved with the GEPI study, said that requests for sterilization procedures among her patients doubled after the state’s abortion ban.

Read previewThe simultaneous detonation of thousands of pagers in Lebanon on Tuesday is a harbinger of a darker and more dangerous age of individualized attacks, according to a retired general and warfare strategist. The pagers were ordered by Hezbollah and were tampered with before they reached Lebanon, some of the officials said. "This is yet another demonstration that individuals are increasingly vulnerable to highly precise and personalized attacks," he said. Related storiesRyan cited the use of armed first-person-view drones on the battlefields in Ukraine and Russia, which he said showed the use of lethal personalized attacks had escalated in the past two years. CNN —Ex-President Donald Trump responded to a second apparent assassination attempt that he blames on incendiary political rhetoric by inflaming the situation even more. He accused President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris of inviting assassins to target him when they warn that he is a threat to democracy. But Trump’s claims that Biden and Harris bear direct culpability underscore the extreme nature of his own political instincts. Biden and Trump had a telephone conversation, and the president conveyed his relief that his erstwhile rival was safe. And when he refused to concede that he lost the 2020 election, Trump called supporters to Washington, DC, and told them to “fight like hell” or they wouldn’t have a country anymore.

More than halfway through the third quarter, many of the biggest commodity ETFs in the United States are in sizable holes. Kathy Kriskey, senior commodities ETF strategist at Invesco, said that oil supply is actually tight at the moment. The commodities slump could be partially due to mechanical factors in the market, such as low trading volumes combined with large commodity trading advisors betting against the sector, Kriskey said. "The price of corn has taken almost three full years from those 2022 spike highs to get back down. Beryl hit Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula as a Category 2 hurricane on Friday, then weakened to a tropical storm. "People in southern Texas now need to really keep an eye on the progress of Beryl," Beven said. Hurricane Beryl rapidly intensified from a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane in two days as it rushed toward the Caribbean this weekend, increasing its wind speed by 45 miles per hour daily. This quick escalation was a direct result of the above-average sea surface temperatures as well as a harbinger of what is to come this hurricane season. “This early-season storm activity is breaking records that were set in 1933 and 2005, two of the busiest Atlantic hurricane seasons on record,” said Philip Klotzbach, an expert in seasonal hurricane forecasts at Colorado State University. Last fall, a study in the journal Scientific Reports found that Atlantic hurricanes from 2001 to 2020 were twice as likely to grow from a weak storm into a hurricane of Category 3 or higher within 24 hours than they were from 1971 to 1990. The study added to a growing body of evidence that rapidly developing major hurricanes were becoming more likely.

Saudi Arabia has not renewed a deal that ensures the use of US dollars in the oil trade. The end of this "petrodollar" agreement will dent dollar dominance, the Atlantic Council wrote. This month, Saudi Arabia did not renew a 1974 accord that mandates the exclusive use of greenbacks when selling its crude oil. What's more, US dependence on Saudi oil has slid considerably, given a historic explosion in US domestic production.
