Israel faced mounting pressure Saturday over its detention of a Gaza hospital chief during a raid on one of the last functioning medical facilities in the battered north of the Palestinian enclave. An Israeli human rights group has filed a petition with the country’s top court demanding to know the whereabouts of Abu Safiya. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan hospital, shows the damage inside the hospital in Beit Lahiya, in the northern Gaza Strip, on Dec. 18, 2024. Israeli forces raided Kamal Adwan Hospital late last month, detaining scores of people and forcing the closure of the medical facility. The Palestinian Health Ministry said Friday that the three public hospitals operating in the northern Gaza Strip — Beit Hanoun Hospital, Indonesian Hospital and Kamal Adwan Hospital — are now all out of service.

Israel has detained the director of one of Gaza’s last functioning hospitals, Gaza’s Health ministry said Saturday after Israeli forces “forcibly” removed patients and staff, and fires burned across the hospital. “The occupation forces arrested Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital,” the ministry said in a statement. Gaza’s health ministry said fire had spread to several departments of the hospital. "Every day, we say farewell to roses; every day, we say farewell to grooms," she said, referring to the Gaza's youth killed in the war. “They are in a very miserable and difficult situation, with no water, no electricity, no blankets, no food, and no supplies,” the Health Ministry said.

One of northern Gaza’s last functioning hospitals, Kamal Adwan in Beit Lahia, is “suffering from a stifling siege,” Gaza's Health Ministry said Friday after Israeli forces stormed inside and removed health workers, patients and family members, as military vehicles surrounded the hospital. Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the hospital's head, said in an Instagram story that the Israeli army was “burning all the operating departments in the hospital” while medical staff was still present inside. “It is another dark day in the ongoing series of crimes against Kamal Adwan Hospital and its staff,” he added. Israeli attacks on the hospital over the past few weeks have killed several medics and patients at Kamal Adwan, including the hospital’s ICU director, Dr. Ahmed al-Kahlout. The Palestinian Health Ministry noted that the three public hospitals operating in the northern Gaza Strip — Beit Hanoun Hospital, Indonesian Hospital and Kamal Adwan Hospital — are now all out of service.

By Nidal al-MughrabiGAZA (Reuters) - Doctors in Gaza say patients arriving at hospitals are showing signs of disease caused by overcrowding and poor sanitation after more than 1.4 million people fled their homes for temporary shelters under Israel's heaviest-ever bombardment. With all hospitals running out of fuel to power their generators, doctors have warned that critical equipment, like incubators for newborns, risk stopping. The World Health Organization warned that a third of Gaza hospitals were not operating. The only other hospital that had still been serving patients in northern Gaza, Beit Hanoun Hospital, stopped operations because of the intense bombardment of the town, the Palestinian Health Ministry said. "If the hospital doesn't get fuel, this is going to be a death sentence against the patients in northern Gaza," said Atef al-Kahlout, the hospital's director.
