WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced late Sunday that Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement who backed his controversial "zero tolerance" policy, will be his administration's "border czar." "I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation’s Borders ('The Border Czar'), including, but not limited to, the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime, and Aviation Security," Trump said on Truth Social. Harris is scheduled to visit a border town in Arizona on Friday, her campaign announced Wednesday. Trump has made the border and immigration a centerpiece of his pitch for the presidency, making multiple visits to the southern border during the campaign. Friday's visit to Douglas, Arizona, will be Harris' second trip to the southern border during her term as vice president. I’m used to Donald Trump being painfully loud, proudly obnoxious and, well, sort of bonkers. I’m used to alligators-on-the-border Trump, sharks-in-the-water Trump, Hannibal Lecter Trump. And this loosely hinged version of Trump scares me much, much more than the utterly unhinged one. He smells victory in November in a way he’s never really smelled it before, and his nose isn’t off. What they did with the platform, just before next week’s Republican National Convention, was soften its anti-abortion stance and tone down the homophobia.

Engineers in Japan are trying to get robots to imitate that particularly human expression — the smile. They have created a face mask from human skin cells and attached it to robots with a novel technique that conceals the binding and is flexible enough to turn down into a grimace or up into a squishy smile. The effect is something between Hannibal Lecter’s terrifying mask and the Claymation figure Gumby. But scientists say the prototypes pave the way for more sophisticated robots, with an outward layer both elastic and durable enough to protect the machine while making it appear more human. Beyond expressiveness, the “skin equivalent,” as the researchers call it, which is made from living skin cells in a lab, can scar and burn and also self-heal, according to a study published June 25 in the journal Cell Reports Physical Science.
