Inflation is drifting down in fits and starts, and so are restaurant menu prices. Diners are more likely to notice stabilizing menu prices at quick-service restaurants than at sit-down ones. But the rate at which all eateries changed their menu prices between the second and third quarters this year plummeted by 26%, the company said. Quick-service restaurants have benefited from slower growth in labor costs, Square found. The company estimates annual inflation faced by quick-service operators at 3.6% as of September, versus 4.3% for restaurants with table service.

Being a traditional wife means wanting the best for my husband. AdvertisementMy journey to becoming a "trad wife" — or traditional wife — started in 2012 when I made dinner for a man I barely knew. I also knew I wanted to be the kind of old-fashioned wife we now call a trad wife. AdvertisementTo me, a "trad wife" isn't about how many kids you have. Being a traditional wife means I am secure in my place in this world and in my marriage.

CNN —California voters will decide this election whether to increase the state’s minimum wage to $18 an hour, which would be the highest in the US. Currently, the Golden State’s minimum wage is $16 and is set to rise to $16.50 next year. California has been among the more aggressive states when it comes to hiking the minimum wage. Some 44% of likely California voters said they would vote yes in an October poll conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California, down from 50% in September. Jerry Brown, gradually raised the minimum wage, giving employers the opportunity to adjust, Condie said.

A deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald 's Quarter Pounders has led to 75 cases in 13 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday, as it investigates the source of the spread. All of the 42 people who were interviewed by the CDC reported eating at McDonald's, while 39 people reported eating a beef hamburger, the agency said. Quarter Pounder hamburgers are a core menu item for McDonald's, raking in billions of dollars annually. As the CDC and other federal agencies trace cases and work to contain the outbreak, McDonald's has pulled Quarter Pounders from restaurants in the affected areas. Experts told CNBC that barring a more serious crisis, the damage to its brand may be minimal, as with an E. coli outbreak linked to Wendy's two years ago.

One of the patients in the McDonald's outbreak suffered from that condition, known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. Hedberg is also a member of the McDonald's Food Safety Advisory Council, but said he has not worked with the company on its response to the outbreak. The size of the outbreak "would imply widespread undercooking by many different individual McDonald's restaurants" if beef was the culprit, according to Hedberg. For example, rival Wendy's dealt with its own link to an E. coli outbreak two years ago. However, that transparency means more media coverage, which reminds consumers about the crisis and risks scaring them away from McDonald's restaurants.

Two of the hospitalized patients had hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication that can develop from an E. coli infection. The CDC opened the investigation on Tuesday, initially reporting 49 cases in 10 states – including 10 hospitalizations and one death. It can take weeks to determine whether an illness is part of an outbreak and these numbers were expected to grow. “The FDA is using all available tools to confirm if onions are the source of this outbreak,” an agency spokesperson said in a statement. McDonald’s has taken Quarter Pounders off the menu in about a fifth of its stores.

In vulnerable groups, E. coli infection can also lead to serious kidney complications and death. People can become infected after consuming contaminated food or water, or coming into contact with the feces of animals or infected people. E. coli symptoms usually show up three to four days after ingesting the bacteria, but it may take up to 10 days. Once the contaminated food enters the kitchen, it’s also possible for cross-contamination to occur if ingredients are mixed or handled improperly. If you are experiencing diarrhea, don't swim in a public pool to minimize the risk of transmission.

A McDonald's Quarter Pounder hamburger is shown in this photograph, in New York's Times Square, Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024. An E. coli outbreak has been traced to McDonald's Quarter Pound hamburgers served with raw slivered onions. An FDA spokesperson confirmed Thursday the agency was investigating Taylor Farms, adding, "We're looking at all possible sources." A McDonald's spokesperson said Wednesday that the raw onions were sourced from a single supplier and processed at a single facility. According to the company's website, Taylor Farms is a California-based producer of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables.

AdvertisementMcDonald's shares dropped more than 9% on Tuesday after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said one person died and 10 others were hospitalized in connection with an E. coli outbreak linked to the fast food chain's Quarter Pounders. The statement said the illnesses may be linked to slivered onions used in the Quarter Pounders, which are sourced by a single supplier that serves three distribution centers. New York CNN —Wednesday is National Cheeseburger Day, with some of the biggest chains offering some much-needed discounts amid consumer complaints about rising prices. It’s part of company’s string of deals to kickstart slumping sales, including recently extending its popular $5 value meal until December. Fast food has been a low-profit margin business with little customer loyalty. McDonald’s pricey burgers have become a flashpoint of criticism and a symbol of elevated fast food prices. So deals are particularly crucial to fast food companies at the moment to lure customers back.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday detailed why he thinks the Federal Reserve will soon implement interest rate cuts, saying earnings season so far makes it clear that consumers continue to feel the weight of inflation. "I think that's why the Fed really laid the groundwork for a rate cut when it issued its statement today." At its Wednesday meeting, the Federal Reserve chose to hold rates steady, saying there has been "some further progress" towards its 2% inflation goal. Consumers are turning away from companies they feel have priced their goods too high, Cramer said. "Things are too expensive because people aren't doing well enough to afford to buy them, and interest rates are too high.

The McDouble wasn't the best burger I've ever had, but it was certainly passable. The McDonald's website says it should also include mustard, but I didn't taste any or see any. My biggest issue with the burger was that I thought it was bone-dry. But even though I didn't love my McDouble, I'm not writing the meal off. I could always get a McChicken as part of the deal instead or try a different location's McDouble burger.

California is likely to be especially hard hit, with highs passing 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 degrees Celsius) in many areas. For instance, chicken should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit, and ground beef should be cooked to at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit. That applies to cooked meat like hamburgers as well as perishable salads like potato salad and cole slaw. Not only can raw milk harbor bacteria, but it is also possible that raw milk can transmit the bird flu. It wasn’t advisable for people to drink raw milk or consume products made from raw milk prior to the bird flu outbreak, and it certainly is not advisable now.

The average cookout for 10 people will cost $71.22 this year, up 5% from 2023 and about 30% five years ago, according to an American Farm Bureau Federation estimate. That said, consumers have seen prices fall for some specific barbecue items like chicken breast and potatoes, the Farm Bureau said. Meat (including ground beef, pork chops and chicken breast) accounts for 50% of the total cost of an Independence Day barbecue, according to the Farm Bureau. Two pounds of potatoes cost $1.53, down 17%, the Farm Bureau said.
