Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday said that he supports restricting “single-sex facilities” in the Capitol, including restrooms, to “individuals of that biological sex”— which would effectively ban the first transgender congresswoman from using women’s bathrooms in the next Congress. Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., introduced a resolution this week that would ban transgender women from using women's bathrooms and other facilities at the Capitol. She said Tuesday the bill "absolutely" targets Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, D-Del., the first openly transgender person elected to Congress. In a statement posted to X on Wednesday, McBride wrote, “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. We should be focused on bringing down the cost of housing, health care, and child care, not manufacturing culture wars."

He even tapped other senior House Democrats to echo his message to the Biden team, according to another person familiar with the efforts. Still, unlike some in his party, Jeffries is not in despair, according to multiple people familiar with his thinking. But Democrats say Jeffries — alongside Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who will serve as minority leader in the next Congress — might be the best person to at least try. Speaker Mike Johnson on Sunday left the door open to adjourning Congress so President-elect Donald Trump can appoint his Cabinet nominees outside of the usual Senate confirmation process if necessary. Both chambers usually gavel in for pro forma sessions even during times of recess specifically to prevent the president from making recess appointments and bypassing congressional approval. President Barack Obama once tried to use recess appointments and was rebuked by the Supreme Court, which said in 2014 that recesses needed to be 10 days or longer for recess appointments to be legal. Johnson isn’t the only Trump ally who has left the door open to using a recess appointment to confirm Trump’s Cabinet picks. “I have literally not discussed one word about the ethics report, not once, and I’ve been with him quite a bit this week,” Johnson said.

WASHINGTON — Americans are poised to elect a new Congress, with control of both chambers at stake as every seat in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is up before voters on Election Day. Republicans favored to win the SenateIn the Senate, Democrats currently have a 51-49 edge, but Republicans are favored to capture the majority. They’re all but guaranteed to win an open seat in ruby-red West Virginia, with Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin retiring. If Harris wins, Republicans will need one more seat in addition to West Virginia to capture the Senate. In New York, Republicans are defending four seats they flipped in 2022, propelling them to win the House majority.

With so much at stake, CNN has identified 10 races to watch on Tuesday – grouped into buckets that nod to broader themes across the House landscape. Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger decided against seeking a fourth term, instead launching a campaign for governor in 2025. Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has crafted a moderate profile by challenging his party on issues ranging from spending to immigration. This year she faces a challenge from GOP state Rep. Gabe Evans, a fellow Mexican American and a former Army helicopter pilot and police officer. GOP Rep. Zach Nunn, an Air Force officer, was first elected in 2022 – defeating Democratic Rep. CNN —Victor Wembanyama recorded the second 5x5 game of his career on Thursday to power the San Antonio Spurs to a 106-88 victory over the Utah Jazz. Wembanyama finished with 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and five blocks, becoming just the third player in NBA history with multiple 5x5 games after Hakeem Olajuwon and Andrei Kirilenko. A 5x5 line, a very rare occurrence in the NBA, requires a player to record at least five of a stat in five separate categories, such as points, rebounds, assists, etc. Ja Morant records triple-double in Grizzlies winMorant led the Grizzlies past a struggling Bucks team. Two statewide Siena polls have also shown Trump performing better than his 2020 vote share in New York State as a whole. WASHINGTON — Among the many permutations for how the elections could end, one prospect has sparked chatter in both parties: Donald Trump could win the presidency while Democrats seize control of the House. Such a split would be rare — not since 1989 has a president entered office without his party controlling the House — and give Democrats substantial power over Trump's legislative agenda. In addition, persisting signs of ticket-splitting indicate Trump voters won’t all pull the lever for his party’s candidates down the ballot.
