TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Typhoon Koinu swept southern Taiwan on Thursday, injuring 190 people but causing no deaths as it brought pounding rain and record-breaking winds to the island, leading to school and office closures. The typhoon brought the fastest wind ever recorded in Taiwan as it approached on Wednesday night. On Thursday afternoon, Koinu's maximum sustained winds measured 155 kph (96 mph) with gusts of 191 kph (119 mph). Despite weakening, typhoon Koinu is expected to douse coastal areas of southern China over the weekend. Taiwan sits in an active region for tropical cyclones, but Koinu is only the second typhoon to make landfall in four years.

Hong Kong shuts schools as it issues heavy rain warning

HONG KONG, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Hong Kong closed schools on Thursday after authorities issued the second-highest rain signal and warned of extensive flooding, just days after the Asian financial hub was drenched by the heaviest rain since records began 140 years ago. The city's weather observatory issued the "red" signal before 6 a.m. local time, saying rain exceeding 50 millimetres in an hour is falling and likely to continue. "Heavy rain will bring flash floods and flooding is occurring or expected to occur in watercourses," it said. Hong Kong's stock market will remain open unless the highest "black" signal is issued. The heavy rain comes as the city is still repairing damage caused by torrential rain linked to typhoon Haikui which passed nearby in recent days.

Rains from dying typhoon batter China for seventh day

BEIJING, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Heavy rains from a typhoon kept southern China drenched for the seventh day as slow-moving storm clouds drifted from Guangdong on the coast to Guangxi, flooding low-lying areas, blocking roads and trapping residents. Heavy rain is expected to persist in Guangxi over the next few days. Neighbouring Hong Kong was pelted by the worst storm in 140 years. "Typhoons that move far inland affect regions historically less exposed to heavy rainfall and strong wind, often with lower disaster resilience, leading to more severe losses," said Shao Sun, a climatologist at the University of California, Irvine. Still, Shenzhen's observatory has issued emergency warnings advising residents to stay indoors, warning downpours were abrupt and intense. Some Shenzhen districts closed offices while all schools were suspended. Authorities suspended services at Liantang Port and Wenjindu Port connecting Shenzhen and Hong Kong due to flood damage.
