CNN —Israeli police have arrested a top aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over allegedly leaking classified information to foreign media. Opposition leaders say the intelligence was “faked,” and part of a ruse to thwart a ceasefire and hostage deal in Gaza. Protesters in Tel Aviv call on Netanyahu to strike a deal to release hostages held in Gaza, in late October. The next day, Netanyahu held a news conference and presented an alleged Hamas document he said was found in a tunnel in Gaza. “This affair came out of the Prime Minister’s own office, and the investigation must examine if it wasn’t at the Prime Minister’s orders.”Dana Karni and Mike Schwartz contributed to this report.

Israel openly said it conducted “precise strikes” on military targets in Iran. “Israel now has broader aerial freedom of operation in Iran,” Israel’s military spokesman Daniel Hagari said, touting achievements in the attack. The idea was that if Israel were to strike Iran, Tehran would retaliate by unleashing its militias against Israel. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that they have no intention of weaponizing the country’s nuclear program, while simultaneously using its potential as leverage in negotiations with the West. “Even the more hawkish American presidents have not favored taking military strikes because the most likely outcome is that, at some point, that will make Iran turn nuclear,” Parsi said.

The Israeli military expanded its offensive in Lebanon overnight, striking bank branches across the country to target Hezbollah‘s finances in an assault that sparked panic in Beirut, as Secretary of State Antony Blinken was heading to the Middle East to push for a diplomatic solution to the intensifying regional conflict. But it also comes as Israel prepares an attack against Iran itself. The U.S. and Israel have linked the bank to the Iran-backed militant and political group. An NBC News crew in Beirut heard the blasts ring out as Lebanese national media reported strikes on bank branches in the city's southern suburbs. Meanwhile, video shared on social media and geolocated by NBC News showed buildings on fire and collapsing after apparent air strikes.

Israelis take cover as projectiles launched from Iran are being intercepted in the skies over in Rosh HaAyin, Israel, on October 1, 2024. The Pentagon said the attack on Tuesday was twice as large as Iran’s last barrage against Israel in April. Tehran said the barrage was a response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others. It opted for a limited response back in April following pleas by the US and other allies to exercise restraint. But the words used by Israeli officials on Tuesday suggests the reaction might be more forceful this time.

Israel said Friday that it carried out a strike against Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut. The strike in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh came shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the U.N., vowing that Israel's campaign against Hezbollah would continue. The Israeli army spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said it targeted the main Hezbollah headquarters, located beneath residential buildings. Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said four buildings were reduced to rubble in the blast, so powerful it rattled windows and shook houses some 30 kilometers north of Beirut. Israel has moved thousands of troops toward the border in preparation. At the U.N., Netanyahu vowed to "continue degrading Hezbollah" until Israel achieves its goals, further dimming hopes for an internationally backed cease-fire.

“We are the closest we’ve been to spiraling to a regional war” since Hamas’ October 7 attack, one of the officials said. On Monday, Nasser Kanaani, a spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, warned of “dangerous consequences” following Israel’s strikes. Israel has told the US that a full-scale war is not the intent of its strikes, according to an Israeli official. The goal is a diplomatic solution through escalation, the Israeli official said.

On Monday, Israel intensified its air campaign on Hezbollah, launching “extensive strikes” targeting the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon. It is unclear how many of the casualties were civilians or Hezbollah militants, but many of the locations described by Israel as Hezbollah targets are also residential neighborhoods and villages. The nearly 500 killed on Monday alone is roughly half the number of Lebanese killed throughout the entire 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006. Why is Israel attacking Lebanon? The US believes that neither Israel nor Hezbollah are interested in a full-scale war, but a major concern is that Iran, a key backer of Hezbollah, will get involved, US officials told CNN.

The Israeli military on Monday warned civilians in southern Lebanon to move away from Hezbollah positions as it intensified attacks on its neighbor. "Shortly, the IDF will engage in extensive, precise strikes, against terror targets which have been embedded widely throughout Lebanon," Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said early Monday in a statement. The warning is the first of its kind issued by the IDF in Lebanon, an Israeli military official told NBC News, adding the present campaign only involves aerial strikes. Israel, the official said, wants to create safe conditions for its own citizens to return to the northern part of the country, and destroy Hezbollah's infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
