A tropical storm warning was issued Friday for Hawaii’s Big Island as the storm known as Hone approached with 50 mph winds, forecasters said. Tropical Storm Hone is forecast to pass near or south of the island Saturday night into early Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said. A tropical storm warning was issued for Hawaii County, and swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip currents across the island chain on Saturday, the agency said. (Reuters) -Utility firm Hawaiian Electric said on Tuesday it had begun rolling outages on Hawaii Island due to the unavailability and reduced output from several large generators. The Honolulu-based power company said its largest generator, Hamakua Energy, unexpectedly tripped offline late Tuesday afternoon and Puna Geothermal Venture was operating at a reduced capacity. Hawaiian Electric added one of its combustion turbines had tripped offline on Tuesday evening on the island, which contains the towns of Hilo and Kona. 5, Keahole CT-5, and Puna Steam Plant also are unavailable due to planned annual maintenance or repairs. Hawaiian Electric said the timing and extent of the outages would depend on the amount of demand on the system and the availability of generators.

HILO, Hawaii (AP) — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake on the Big Island of Hawaii was felt widely Monday, but there were no reports of damage or injury, officials said. The earthquake hit at 5:54 p.m. near the Kilauea volcano at a depth of 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) below sea level, according to a statement from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The initial quake and a magnitude 3.0 aftershock were not related to volcanic activity, the statement said. We see no detectable changes in activity at Kilauea as a result of these earthquakes,” the observatory said. There was no risk of a tsunami, officials said.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — For people around the world, the green leaves that sprouted from a scorched, 150-year-old banyan tree in the heart of devastated Lahaina symbolized hope following Maui’s deadly wildfire this summer. Before colonialism, commercial agriculture and tourism, thousands of breadfruit trees dotted Lahaina; the fire charred all but two of the dozen or so that remained. By contrast, researchers believe breadfruit and kukui nut — now the state tree of Hawaii — were among the many edible plants Polynesian voyagers brought around 1,000 years ago. Efforts to revive the banyan and other important surviving trees have included trucking in water, applying compost extract and testing soil. But replanting breadfruit in urban areas comes with challenges, said Steve Nimz, an arborist on Oahu who has been helping restore Lahaina’s trees.

New York CNN —The “face” of the Hawaiian Airlines logo, which has decorated the tails of its airplanes for decades, has passed away. Leina’ala Ann Teruya Drummond, Miss Hawaii 1964, died of cancer Monday at the age of 77 in Hilo, Hawaii. The face is a “promise to our guests that we offer something no other airline can — the warmth, care and generosity that are hallmarks of our Hawaiian culture,” the airline explains its on website. The Miss Hawaii organization said in a statement that Drummond’s “iconic smile, elegance and grace will always be remembered” and noted she placed in the top ten of the Miss America Pageant. “Hawaii lost a talented, poised and gracious woman who touched the hearts of many across the globe,” the organization said.

The world's largest active volcano has erupted in Hawaii for the first time in nearly four decades, officials said. Mauna Loa erupted at 11:30 p.m. local time Sunday night (4:30 a.m. EST on Monday), the United States Geological Survey said. It was the first eruption since 1984, according to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory daily update, issued by the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents at risk from Mauna Loa lava flows were warned to "review preparedness and refer to Hawai‘i County Civil Defense information for further guidance." It is one of six volcanoes in the state of Hawaii, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
