Korean Fried Chicken to Save Your Sunday
  + stars: | 2024-05-19 | by ( Sam Sifton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
That’s often the way of the world: 20-minute jobs that can run to an hour if you’re not careful, two if you’re reckless. So here’s a dinner for anyone who’s wrestled the weekend and brought it only to a draw: Korean fried chicken (above). Julia Moskin adapted the recipe from one developed by the food writer Cecilia Hae-Jin Lee, using either boneless chicken thighs or bone-in wings. Taste the sauce for the glaze as you make it — some will want a little less ketchup, or a little more gochujang. Serve with sheet-pan japchae and beer you’ve stored in the freezer while you’re cooking the chicken, so cold that it has flecks of ice in it.

CNN —American golfer Nelly Korda clinched a remarkable fifth victory in a row on Sunday, sealing her second major title with a win at the Chevron Championship and in the process levelling the LPGA Tour record for consecutive wins. Having begun the year on eight LPGA Tour wins, Korda has surged to 13 in a matter of months. “It’s just been a crazy, crazy, crazy couple of weeks, with some really solid golf,” Korda, still damp from her leap into the lake beside the 18th hole, told reporters. A bogey at the following hole marked her first since the 7th of Friday’s second round, an unblemished 39-hole run. Andy Lyons/Getty ImagesKorda has already topped her most prolific season, a dominant 2021 that saw her tally four LPGA Tour wins.

He tells her he’s planning to visit the city. Given this situation, I knew at least one person would be very upset by the end of the movie. All three films question male conventions and genres in ways that show exactly why we need more films by, and more nominations for, women-directed films. Les Films PelléasTriet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” is about a German novelist, Sandra (Sandra Hüller), accused of murdering her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis). Director Celine Song talks to lead actress Greta Lee on the set of "Past Lives." That doesn’t mean that women directors are less interesting or less original than male directors. Triet, Song and Gerwig have proved that women directors are uniquely positioned to question and rethink old genres, old stories and old ideas.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —South Korea has become the latest country to declare war on bedbugs following a wave of outbreaks, with bathhouses, university dorms, and train stations across the country on high alert. Previously, the country had been practically free of bedbugs following past extermination campaigns, with just nine infestations being reported to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention (KDCA) since 2014. Meanwhile, pest control companies say they have become inundated with phone calls asking for help. “Bedbugs are developing resistance to the insecticides that we commonly use, so the most effective solution these days is heating. “Early and proactive responses are crucial.”In its “Bedbug Prevention and Response Guidelines,” the Seoul City Government advises people against bringing items with a risk of infestation into their homes.

Pay transparency, supporters say, will prevent employers from offering some job candidates less or more money based on age, gender, race or other factors not related to their skills. Advocates believe the change also could help underpaid workers realize they make less than people doing the same job. A similar pay transparency ordinance has been in effect in New York City since 2022. There’s a demand from workers to know of the pay range,” said Da Hae Kim, a state policy senior counsel at the National Women's Law Center. State Senator Jessica Ramos, a Democrat representing parts of Queens, said the law is a win for labor rights groups.

Analyst Maxwell Skor upgraded the biotech stock to overweight from equal weight and raised his price target by $24 to $34. "We see a viable market opportunity with ondemand and short-term prophylactic treatment." The market is split between on-demand treatment and a growing prophylactic segment, according to the note. Skor thinks deucrictibant has a superior safety profile across early clinical trials to the currently dominant therapeutic for the disorder, Orladeyo. He noted, however, that the FDA's clinical hold on prophylactic treatment remains a "key overhang" and that management is expected to submit nonclinical data by 2023.

“Past Lives,” by Korean Canadian writer and director Celine Song, is broadly autobiographical. Before “Past Lives,” Song wrote the stage play “Endlings,” which debuted in 2019 at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with its subsequent New York run cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic. Celine Song directs Greta Lee on location during the production of "Past Lives." “Past Lives” eschews such visual literalism, using its romantic totems Hae Sung and Arthur instead. ‘Past Lives’ Review: Longing for a Future

“Past Lives” is a wistful what-if story about two people, the children they were and the adults they become. The movie follows them through the years and across assorted reunions, separations and continents as well as milestones momentous and ordinary. “Past Lives” centers on Nora (played as an adult by a terrific and subtle Greta Lee) and a boy named Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), though mostly it’s about her. They’re charming — they’re children — and close. Hae Sung comforts her because he’s a nice boy; he will become a nice man, but by then she will be long gone.

Adnan Syed’s conviction in the fatal strangling of Hae Min Lee had been vacated and he was released from prison in 2022. Adnan Syed ’s murder conviction was reinstated by a Maryland appellate court, less than a year after a Baltimore Circuit judge vacated his conviction in the 1999 death of Hae Min Lee , a case that drew national attention on the hit podcast “Serial.”The Appellate Court of Maryland said in an opinion Tuesday the lower court judge had violated the rights of the Lee family when Young Lee , the victim’s brother, wasn’t given enough time to attend a hearing in person last year. Mr. Lee, who lived in California, instead attended the hearing remotely.
March 28 (Reuters) - A Maryland appeals court on Tuesday reinstated the murder conviction of Adnan Syed, who was found guilty of the 1999 killing of his former girlfriend in a case that drew attention after the podcast "Serial" raised doubts about his guilt. After an investigation identified problems with the case, a circuit court judge last year vacated Syed's conviction in the murder of Hae Min Lee and ordered his release. The podcast "Serial," produced by Chicago public radio station WBEZ, drew national attention to the case in 2014. Prosecutors filed a motion last September to vacate the conviction after conducting a yearlong investigation alongside a public defender representing Syed. Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn subsequently ordered Syed to be released from prison, where he was serving a life sentence.
That scene re-creates a moment from director Celine Song's life that inspired her to make the film, her first feature, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. The Korean-Canadian director recounts visiting a bar with her American husband and a childhood sweetheart from Korea. This idea from the movie that we've all known each other from our past lives," Lee told Reuters. "I really hope that people come for the romance and for the love and the idea of just a simple story about love," she said. "But maybe they can leave with something bigger about life and about what connects us to each other as human beings."
SEOUL, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Defence cooperation between South Korea and Indonesia will expand, diplomats from the two countries said on Friday, after a dispute over funding for a joint fighter jet project was resolved last year. "I think both sides are committed and there is no going back on this important initiative." The next-generation aircraft developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (047810.KS) (KAI) is designed to be a cheaper, less stealthy alternative to the U.S.-built F-35, on which South Korea relies. Indonesian Ambassador Gandi Sulistiyanto noted that Indonesian pilots were in South Korea to train with the new jet. President Yoon Suk-yeol has pledged to step up efforts to boost the export of weapons and secure cutting-edge defence technologies as he aims for South Korea to become the world's fourth-largest arms exporter.

Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction was tossed in September after he served 23 years behind bars, has been hired by Georgetown University to work on prison reform. Syed's job as a program associate for Georgetown's Prisons and Justice Initiative is his first 9-to-5 office job, according to the university. Part of Syed’s job will include supporting Georgetown’s "Making an Exoneree" class, in which students re-investigate wrongful convictions, make documentaries about the cases and help free innocent people. In the year leading up to his release, Syed had taken part in Georgetown’s Bachelor of Liberal Arts program in prison. An attorney for Lee's family did not immediately respond to an inquiry Friday seeking comment about Syed's job with Georgetown.
