CNN —Colombia’s congress has voted to change a law that allowed minors to get married with parental consent. The proposal would make the minimum age for marriage 18, and seeks to protect the rights and development opportunities for minors. “Minors are not sexual objects, they’re girls,” congresswoman Clara López Obregón said in a statement after the proposal was greenlit. Child marriage remains a widespread practice worldwide and affects around 12 million girls per year, according to the UN’s agency for children, UNICEF. In Latin America, poverty is the main factor leading to minors getting married, according to UNICEF.

Over eight years after a Florida woman and her 8-year-old daughter went missing, the FBI has arrested the young girl's father in connection with their disappearance. Gustavo Castaño Restrepo, 55, was indicted for kidnapping resulting in death for the disappearance of his ex, Liliana Moreno, and the pair's daughter, Daniela, according to authorities. According to the FBI, Moreno and her daughter were last seen on May 30, 2016, in or near the Home Depot on Okeechobee Road in Hialeah. Detectives told NBC affiliate NBC6 that the day they went missing, Restrepo went to pick up Moreno and her daughter, and the couple got into an argument. Restrepo told detectives he then dropped the two off on Turnpike Avenue.

At least five passages near Panama’s border with Colombia have been shut using barbed wire installed by the country’s border agency (Senafront). The government said the navy is instructed to stop and detain people traveling by boat with “irregular migrants” and to hand them over to police or immigration authorities from Colombia. One of Latin America’s most celebrated journalists, whose work has toppled presidents and set off criminal investigations into government wrongdoing, was recovering from an aggressive bout of chemotherapy when he got more bad news: A Peruvian prosecutor was investigating him for bribery. The journalist, Gustavo Gorriti, 76, the top editor at an investigative news media organization in Peru, is no stranger to trouble. In the 1990s, he was kidnapped by members of a secret death squad that Peruvian investigators later determined was headed by former President Alberto Fujimori. Mr. Gorriti had spent years reporting on corruption and human rights violations by the Fujimori’s government. More recently, he helped expose an enormous bribery scandal known as Operation Carwash that has led to the arrest and resignation of government officials across Latin America.

CNN —Colombia has approved a bill banning bullfights, marking a significant victory for animal rights activists over advocates who argued to uphold the sport in the South American country. On Tuesday, 93 congressmen voted in favor of banning bullfighting – with only two against it – sending the bill to President Gustavo Petro for final approval. Colombia is one of only eight countries where bullfighting still takes place. The others are France, Portugal, Mexico, Ecuador, Peru, Spain and Venezuela, where the controversial sport still commands audiences but also firm opposition. Other countries in South America which have already banned the practice include Brazil and Argentina.
