The Secret Service has assigned five agents to administrative duties as a result of its investigation into the failures that led to the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump on July 13, according to two people familiar with the situation. The agents have not been fired, and are still being paid. The Secret Service declined to comment, citing rules against publicly discussing personnel matters. Four agents placed on administrative duties are from the Pittsburgh office, and one is from Mr. Trump’s personal detail. Placement on administrative duties is different from being placed on administrative leave, which typically requires agents to turn in their badges and guns until an investigation is completed.

A Virginia man has been charged with making numerous death threats against Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. Frank Carillo, of Winchester, Virginia, posted a series of violent threats about Harris last month using an alias on the conservative social media site GETTR, according to a criminal complaint unsealed in the Western District of Virginia on Friday. Investigators alleged that Carillo had posted 19 times about Harris, including threats to shoot, stab and burn her alive. Investigators said a search of Carillo's home turned up two guns — a handgun that he purchased last year and an RF-15 rifle that he bought this year. Carillo also made statements about other federal officials, including President Joe Biden and FBI Director Christopher Wray, the complaint alleged.

According to court records, Frank Lucio Carillo made several threats against Harris, President Joe Biden, FBI Director Christopher Wray, several Arizona officials, and others on the right-wing social media platform Gettr. In response to a subpoena, the FBI found 4,359 posts from Carillo “targeting various public officials,” including Harris. In several posts, Carillo allegedly threatened to cut out Harris’ eyes and described various ways he wanted to kill the vice president, court records say. Massachusetts gangster Paul J. DeCologero was sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to an assault charge. Defense attorney Patrick Nash began by conveying an apology from DeCologero to Bulger’s family as well as the inmate’s own relatives. In Bulger’s killing, “Paul was involved,” Nash said. After Bulger was killed, prison officials were criticized for placing him in the general population instead of more protective housing.

But Hsin-mei Cheng, the showrunner of “Zero Day,” worried that her fellow Taiwan citizens have grown “too numb” to the danger of an impending conflict. A Florida deputy was killed and two others are hospitalized with injuries following an “ambush” shooting overnight at a home in Lake County, authorities said. Deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home around 8 p.m. Friday after receiving calls about a disturbance. The first deputy to enter the home was shot in the shoulder and was trapped inside the home, the sheriff said. During the attack, a second deputy was hit in the armpit and stomach area multiple times, Grinnell told reporters. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends and Lake County Sheriff’s Office after the tragic death of a deputy last night.
