In 2022, oil flow in the Strait of Hormuz averaged 21 million barrels per day, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Saul Kavonic, senior research analyst at MST Financial, said supply disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz could send oil prices significantly higher. Oil prices traded more than 3% on Monday, extending gains even after notching their sharpest weekly gain since early 2023 last week. "But seeing where the oil price sits right now the market doesn't seem to hold much probability for such a development at all," he added. "A significant disruption to these flows would be enough to push oil prices to new record highs, surpassing the record high of close to $150/bbl in 2008," he added.

Twice this year, US forces in the region have assisted Israel in intercepting an attack by Iran. CNN —A US Navy replenishment ship sustained damage while operating in the Middle East in an incident that remains under investigation, according to a Navy official. The USNS Big Horn was damaged after the ship refueled and replenished Navy vessels operating in the region, including the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and several guided-missile destroyers. The Navy official would not say where the incident occurred or what type of damage the replenishment oiler sustained. The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group has been operating in and around the Gulf of Oman in an effort to send a message of deterrence to Iran. All crew members on board the ship are safe, and US 5th Fleet, which controls Navy operations in the Middle East, is assessing the situation, the official added.

A ship in the Red Sea was targeted in a third attack suspected to have been carried out by Yemen’s Houthi rebels Tuesday in their campaign of assaults over the Israel-Hamas war, officials said. The Houthis have targeted more than 70 vessels with missiles and drones since the start of the war in Gaza in October. Other missiles and drones have been either intercepted by a U.S.-led coalition in the Red Sea or failed to reach their targets. CNN —Iranian authorities have warned that crocodiles are being forced from their natural habitats as floods devastate parts of the country’s southeast. Three road construction workers have died in the flooding, Iranian state news agency IRNA reported on Thursday, which came after a record-breaking storm hit the Middle East. Videos broadcast by state news media IRNA and Tasnim showed widespread floods with people using boats to rescue others. The weather conditions were associated with a larger storm system traversing the Arabian Peninsula and moving across the Gulf of Oman. In Oman, at least 18 were killed in flash floods triggered by heavy rain, the country’s National Committee for Emergency Management said.

Cars are stuck on a flooded road after a rainstorm hit Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Wednesday. Large jets looked more like boats moving through the flooded airport as water sprayed in their wake and waves rippled through the deep water. Video shared on social media showed furniture flying off balconies. Images published in local media showed traffic gridlocked on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road, a 16-lane thoroughfare. Other videos from social media showed water rushing through a major shopping mall and inundating the ground floor of homes.

CNN —Warships from China, Russia and Iran have held live-fire exercises in a key Middle Eastern waterway this week as the three partners put on a show of force in the volatile region, according to reports in state-run media. China’s navy sent a guided-missile destroyer and guided-missile frigate to the exercises, Russia dispatched the cruiser Varyag from its Pacific Fleet, and Iran contributed a range of vessels, including frigates and fast-attack boats, according to state-run media. Scheduled to run through Friday, the exercises are in their sixth incarnation since 2018, Russian state news agency TASS reported. Iran is a key supporter of both Hamas in Gaza and the Houthi rebels. Iranian munitions, including its Shahed aerial drones, have also become an important part of Russia’s arsenal in its war on Ukraine.
