GUATEMALA CITY — A Guatemalan judge on Friday ruled that jailed journalist José Zamora can leave prison and be held in house arrest after over 800 days behind bars. Zamora, a well-known journalist who founded the now-defunct El Periódico newspaper and whose work has criticized successive governments, was arrested in July 2022 on money laundering charges. Zamora was in 2023 sentenced to six years in prison for money laundering. Judge Erick Garcia on Friday argued that Zamora’s time in preventative prison had reached its limit, in line with human rights standards. “We are imposing house arrest,” Garcia said in his ruling.

This is Street Wars, a weekly series on the battle for space on New York’s streets and sidewalks. Jackson Heights, Queens, has been called “the most culturally diverse neighborhood in New York, if not on the planet.” It is also a neighborhood with the some of the least green space in New York. San Salvador CNN —At least 30 people have died in the heavy rains pounding Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador this week, according to authorities in each country. In El Salvador, 19 deaths have been recorded due to the storms, the director of Civil Protection, Luis Alonso Amaya, told local media. Among the victims are two minors who died after a landslide buried their home in the Soyapango district, located about six miles from capital San Salvador. More than 2,500 people in El Salvador have been evacuated from their homes and have been placed in shelters. In Guatemala, 10 people died have died due to the rains and more than 350 people have been evacuated and are staying in shelters, according to the country’s National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred).

Jesus Campos said he worked at Brawner Builders alongside the men missing after a bridge collapse in Baltimore. “We’re low-income families,” said Jesus Campos, who has worked at the construction company, Brawner Builders, for about eight months. Most people think of endangered languages as far-flung or exotic, the opposite of cosmopolitan. All told, there are more endangered languages in and around New York City than have ever existed anywhere else, says Perlin, who has spent 11 years trying to document them. She has published children’s books in Wakhi and other endangered languages of the Pamir mountains in Central Asia. By the start of the pandemic, the city had begun official outreach in nine Indigenous languages and recorded videos in several other endangered languages. The Central American country is one of only 13 nations that maintain diplomatic ties with Chinese-claimed Taiwan.
