What Boeing wants in its new CEOWhen picking a new CEO, the company likely has two pools of choices. Or it can once again pick a leader like outgoing CEO Calhoun, who has a financial background and an undergraduate degree in accounting. Spirit was the only one to comment, but it did not address the possibility of Shanahan becoming Boeing CEO. Culp has an undergraduate degree in economics and an MBA from Harvard, a business background more than an engineering background.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson gained national attention this summer when he proposed buying one-way airfare out of Alaska's largest city for anyone without housing who wanted to leave before winter. The Anchorage Assembly just approved $4 million in funds and will vote on additional elements of an emergency plan next week. Anchorage last winter had a record 24 deaths outdoors among the homeless population, with 11 fatalities occurring in the winter months between October 2022 and April 2023, said Alexis Johnson, the city's homeless director. The city recently brought four more housing facilities, which could create space for another 310 people, but is still seeking winter housing for an estimated 400 to 450 people. By renting hotel rooms, Johnson hopes to limit the capacity of a mass winter homeless shelter to no more than 150 people — one of the Assembly's stipulations when releasing the emergency funds.

☆ Artificial Intelligence Steps In to Lower Carbon Footprint of Buildings

Artificial intelligence is starting to help buildings go greener. Developers and construction companies have pursued more-efficient energy use in buildings over the past couple of decades. “We want to make every building out there as smart as it can be,” said Ramya Ravichandar, JLL Technologies’s vice president, technology platforms—smart and sustainable buildings. For instance, software and hardware that automatically manages lights, heating and cooling can help buildings cut 20% or more of their yearly energy use. “The main message overall is we’re not going to save the planet with software, and AI is software,” Smithies said.

☆ Teradyne beats results estimates as AI boom supports chip demand

July 26 (Reuters) - Chip-testing machines maker Teradyne (TER.O) on Wednesday surpassed estimates for sales and profit in the second quarter, helped by growing demand for semiconductors that power artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Higher shipments in Teradyne's core semiconductor-test segment more than offset weaker robotics demand, said Teradyne CEO Greg Smith. For the current quarter, strong demand is seen from data center and automotive end-markets while order rates in robotics may decline, the company said. The boom in demand for AI capabilities have benefited companies in the chip supply chain, softening the impact from a post-pandemic downturn in sales of personal computers and smartphones. The company earned 79 cents per share on an adjusted basis, higher than estimates of 66 cents.

A software and robotics machine called mGripAI from Massachusetts-based Soft Robotics sorts artifical pieces of chicken into trays for packaging at an automation conference held by the Association for Advancing Automation in Detroit. But other industries where robotics haven't yet taken hold may be potential investment opportunities and expansion areas for automation companies in the coming years. Another category killer fell this week, when Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy. Once the go-to stop for everything in customers’ homes, Bed Bath & Beyond was brought down by shopping changes, competition and its own missteps. Founded in 1971 as Bed ‘n Bath as a small linen and bath store, the company changed its name to Bed Bath & Beyond in 1987 to reflect its expanded merchandise selection and built larger superstores. It’s somewhat ironic that there is now nostalgia for Bed Bath & Beyond and other once dominant chains that drove mom-and-pops out of business.

Greg Smithies leads the biggest fund focused on the decarbonization of real estate. Smithies has worked on sustainability issues and with Elon Musk's The Boring Company. But Smithies is no stranger to investment-led decarbonization efforts, having tackled the problem for much of his career. "At the end of the day, software isn't going to solve the climate crisis," Smithies said. But above all, he's focused on the money and the potential savings that low-carbon technology can have on real estate.

Boosting energy efficiency of older buildings is seen as a key way to help countries meet their climate goals, although the pace of change has been slow so far. "What we figured out is that most buildings (...) are running on control technology that really hasn't changed since the 60s or 70s," President of Runwise Lee Hoffman said. "On a macro level, about 45% of carbon emissions in most major cities are coming from how buildings operate. So if you want to address climate, you literally have to start with buildings," he added. European Union lawkmakers last month backed plans to save more energy, including through renovating draughty buildings.
