VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — A Canadian fishing boat rescued an American man one day after the U.S. Coast Guard ended its search for a missing commercial fishing boat from Washington state with two people board, authorities said. BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore City Council on Monday confirmed Richard Worley as the city’s new police commissioner, a leadership change that comes amid an ongoing push for reform of the embattled agency that began after Freddie Gray’s 2015 death. Harrison led the New Orleans Police Department through a similar reform process before moving to Baltimore. While Harrison brought an outsider’s perspective to the job, Worley is a Baltimore native and a longtime department veteran. ROME (AP) — “Poor Things,” a film about Victorian-era female empowerment, won the Golden Lion on Saturday at a Venice Film Festival largely deprived of Hollywood glamour because of the writers and actors strikes. Redd Holt, a drummer who in the 1960s, before jazz fusion became a popular term, struck a beat that had both the kick of funk and the delicacy of jazz on a number of surprisingly popular instrumental tunes, died on May 23 in Chicago. The death, at a hospital, was caused by complications of lung cancer, his son Reginald said. Mr. Holt scored his biggest hit as the drummer with the pianist Ramsey Lewis’s trio, whose original lineup also included Eldee Young on bass. For the Time Capsule series, we spotlight a cherished restaurant, hotel or landmark that’s changed remarkably little over the years. This week, we visit Gray’s Papaya in New York City. THENIn 1973, Nicholas Gray, a Chilean-born adventurer of sorts who worked at Arctic radar stations to pay for college, ditched his Wall Street stockbroker job to open a Papaya King franchise on the corner of Broadway and 72nd St. Two years later, released from the franchise contract, Mr. Gray renamed the plum spot Gray’s Papaya and slashed the cost of a hot dog from 75 cents to 50 cents, announcing the price cut on a big white sign (the first of many) exclaiming “Hot Dog Revolution!” in emphatic red letters.
