  + stars: | 2024-09-18 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
CNN —A woman has died following a shark attack in the Atlantic Ocean near the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa. She was transferred by helicopter to a hospital on the Canary island of Gran Canaria, where she died, the spokesperson added. The woman suffered a heart attack after losing her leg, according to local media reports confirmed to CNN by Sasemar. Shark attacks near the Canary Islands are rare, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File, with only six confirmed incidents on record. The Canary Islands have long been a popular holiday destination, thanks to their temperate year-round climate.

The dunes are considered a special natural reserve with "incalculable ecological value," according to the official tourism website for the island. CNN —A dream trip turned into a nightmare for the 1,000 passengers on board a cruise ship that was hit in storms, injuring 100. Everything went to plan until day 10 – November 2 – when the ship was en route to Gran Canaria, as storms approached. The ship remained safe at all times, but due to the impact of the storm some guests sustained injuries. It was last tracked off the coast of southern England, having departed Portsmouth for Lisbon, according to tracking website Vesselfinder. The route will take the ship through the Bay of Biscay again – hopefully with a smoother crossing this time.

Spain to create emergency accommodation for 3,000 migrants
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Borja Suarez/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMADRID, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Spain said on Thursday it would create additional emergency accommodation for 3,000 undocumented migrants in military barracks, hotels and hostels amid a 55% jump in arrivals by sea this year, which has triggered political tension. Escriva declined to disclose how many additional beds will be created, but a ministry source told Reuters it would be around 3,000 in total. But this time the central government's approach has been to expand emergency accommodations across the country, hoping to ease pressure on the Canaries. Following police screenings, migrants will be placed in the military barracks, hotels, hostels and other types of accommodations on a voluntary basis, the ministry source said. Escriva argued the situation was well-handled and manageable, and said some conservative politicians were whipping up what he called xenophobic rhetoric.

MADRID, Oct 16 (Reuters) - At least 8,561 migrants have reached the Canary Islands over the past two weeks, representing more than a third of this year's total arrivals, data from Spain's interior ministry showed on Monday. Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 15 of this year, the islands in the Atlantic received 23,537 migrants, an 80% increase from the same period last year, the data showed. The archipelago's seven islands have become the main destination for migrants from Senegal and other African countries trying to reach Spain. One aircraft will patrol the waters off Senegal and Mauritania and a second will monitor the waters around the Canary Islands. Why you should be traveling to Europe in fall, not summer
  + stars: | 2023-09-25 | by ( Terry Ward | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
And now it’s fall, when the continent really comes into its own as the leaves – and visitor numbers – start to drop. A recent report from luxury travel network Virtuoso named Paris, London and Florence as the most booked cities for fall travel. “Fall is one of the best times to visit Europe because of the vast variety of interests [the season] can cater to,” says Mina Agnos, president of luxury travel company Travelive. If you’re ready for a different take on Europe this fall, we’ve got ideas. Fall also means it’s harvest time in Rebland – an area southwest of Baden-Baden famous for its Riesling.

The global pact to conserve biodiversity on the high seas was finally agreed in March and formally adopted by the United Nations in June. It is seen as a crucial tool to meet a target agreed last year to protect 30% of the earth's land and sea by 2030, known as "30 by 30". At least 60 countries are expected to sign the agreement at the annual United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday. Mads Christensen, interim executive director of Greenpeace International, described the signings as a "powerful signal" and help maintain momentum to meet the "30 by 30" target. "Now politicians must bring the treaty home and ensure it is ratified in record time."

Strong travel demand helps TUI swing back to profit

That was despite prices rising 7% over last year, indicating that the higher cost of travel wasn't dampening demand. In particular, the wildfires in Rhodes, Greece meant approximately 8,000 TUI customers had to leave their hotels, TUI said. The cost of that will be reflected in the full-year results and is expected to be close to 25 million euros. Ebel said that the Mediterranean region in Europe remained one of the top destinations for the tour group despite extreme weather. "The heatwave in Northern Europe in June and the wildfires in Southern Europe have only dampened temporarily the previously strong development," he said.

This year, 18% fewer Germans went on summer holidays than in 2019, according to Germany's tourism industry group DRV.
