The pay rise comes less than a week after hundreds of workers at an Amazon warehouse in Coventry in central England staged the latest walkout in a dispute over pay this year. "We're listening to Amazon workers and the message is very clear: this new pay rate is an insult," said Amanda Gearing, senior organiser of GMB, the union which represents more than 500 Amazon workers. The union had said the Amazon Coventry workers are demanding 15 pounds an hour to cope with a cost-of-living crisis that has sparked strikes across sectors in Britain over the last several months. The new increase, which will depend on locations and start from April, comes after Amazon last year raised UK hourly wages by 50 pence to between 10.50 and 11.45 pounds per hour. "Over the past seven months, our minimum pay has risen by 10% and by more than 37% since 2018," Amazon said in a statement.
Amazon plans to shut three UK warehouses, impacting 1,200 jobs

LONDON, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Amazon (AMZN.O) plans to shut three warehouses in Britain in a move that will impact 1,200 jobs, but workers will be given the chance to transfer to other units, the online retail giant said on Tuesday. Those employees will be given the chance to move jobs internally, said Amazon, with those from the first two sites moving to other warehouses nearby. Amazon says it operates 30 large warehouses across the United Kingdom. Amazon said it planned to open two new warehouses in central and north east England over the next three years, a move it said will create 2,500 new jobs. The planned closing of the British warehouses are not part of the wider restructuring which mainly covers non-warehouse roles in e-commerce and human resources.
Workers work inside an Amazon.co.uk fulfillment centre in Hemel Hempstead, north of London, on November 25, 2015. LONDON — Amazon confirmed Tuesday that it has launched a consultation to close three U.K. warehouses, where it employs a combined 1,200 people. The company plans to open two new fulfilment centers in the U.K. over the next three years, in Peddimore and Stockton-on-Tees, adding 2,500 jobs. The Amazon spokesperson added that the U.K. site closures were not part of the 18,000 job cuts that the company announced last week. "Hard-up Amazon workers can't suddenly be expected to up sticks and move to a different fulfilment centre which may be many miles away," he said, accusing the firm of failing to provide a stable employment model.
