Not really, but Balsam Hill makes the closest I've seen. It weighs 4 ounces and seemed to depress the Balsam Hill tree's branches more than other trees I tested, like the one from Puleo International. But it's the most realistic artificial tree I've seen. AdvertisementThe bottom lineFor an artificial tree, the Balsam Hill Fraser Fir manages to be convincingly real when lit. $899.99 from Balsam Hill Originally $1,299.99 Save 31%AdvertisementMore Balsam Hill trees to consider

His son Christopher said he died in a hospital but did not specify the cause. Mr. Benson practiced the ancient and exacting art of carving into rock; slate was his preferred medium. He did so, precisely and gorgeously, on cornerstones, gravestones and monuments, as his father had before him, working out of an atelier in Newport called the John Stevens Shop. The art Mr. Benson practiced is mostly devoted to mortality, the brief span of a life, though it is designed for eternity, or something close to it. Mr. Benson could spend a day carving a cross; a gravestone might take three months.

Here's what to say, and what not to say, to be a more successful employee or manager, according to speech experts, leadership coaches, and psychologists. To be a better manager or employee, there are some phrases you should use more at work, and some you shouldn't say at all. Workplace relationships can be tricky to build — you want to look competent, form connections, and also not overstep boundaries. Say: "Thank you." "And I parsed it and I thought, 'What a gorgeously chilly way of saying: Your problems don't matter to me.'"

“Frankly, I hate dialogue,” Villeneuve told The Times of London. I don’t remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. This supposed truism is heard everywhere in the film world and even taught to film writers. Cinema has never been a language of “pure image and sound.”Even in the age of silent films, dialogue rendered as inter-titles was critical to cinema. Charlie Chaplin stars in his 1931 silent film, "City Lights."

As origin stories go, the transformation of “Days of Wine and Roses” from a movie into a musical is a straight shot, with a twist. They talked through their coordinating vision for evolving “Wine and Roses,” the midcentury classic of a romance ruined by addiction. She already had a co-star in mind: Brian d’Arcy James, debonair and wry, like Jack Lemmon was in the 1962 movie, opposite the O’Hara look-alike Lee Remick. The film memorably traced the stuttery arc of alcoholism and recovery, a trajectory now familiar — onscreen and off — but rarely put to song. The production takes pains to show the love that propels their characters’ relationship — however misguided it turns out to be.

Jesse Green’s Best Theater | Unforgettable ExperiencesJESSE GREENYear of the DramedyIf 2023 was a tragedy in the world, on New York stages it was a dramedy year, highlighted not only by serious plays with great jokes, but also by flat-out comedies with dark underpinnings. Its residents included an unemployed man in his 50s, his barely-holding-on mother, a pregnant woman, two refugees — and us. Seated adjacent to the facility’s dingy common room, we became, in the playwright’s own staging, fellow residents. But if the others eyed us like we might steal a precious sandwich, we could blithely leave when the play was over. The New York Theater Workshop audience, too, learned a great deal, as the questions bedeviling so many relationships — the complexity of consent and the meaning of control — played out before us in this perfectly timed hot-button play.

If you're speaking with John McWhorter, never use this common phrase: "It is what it is." "The first time someone said that to me was when something unpleasant had happened to me, and he didn't care. "And I parsed it and I thought, 'What a gorgeously chilly way of saying: Your problems don't matter to me.'" But it can come across as so passive that using it can erode other people's trust in you, as McWhorter noted. It's not entirely bad news for McWhorter's least-favorite phrase: Using it can be a sign of emotional resilience, because it shows your ability to accept your circumstances, psychologist Cortney Warren told Make It last month.

“Adults are building more Lego sets for creativity, stress relief, nostalgia and rewarding challenges,” says Ethan Dungan, a Willis, Texas-based artist known for his Lego creations. We spoke to six Lego superfans and artists to get their recommendations of the very best sets for adults available to buy now. TERRACE STORY, by Hilary LeichterPriced out of their first home in an unnamed city, a young couple and their infant daughter, Rose, move into a smaller apartment. Structured as a collection of four linked stories, the book moves from Annie and Edward to another young couple, George and Lydia, who happens to be Rose’s daughter and is pregnant with her own. In the third section — the longest and most revelatory — Annie’s co-worker Stephanie is the focus of a grief-stricken origin story that deepens the novel’s supernatural fancies. The fourth section, set on an interstellar “suburb” as humanity migrates into outer space, brings Rose into contact with an “older woman” who is somehow Rose’s granddaughter. By contrast, Leichter announces her metaphysical conceit with a simple dinner party.

When I interviewed the French author Anne Berest some weeks ago I told her I did not have one child, but two; one was gone. “Why are you sorry,” she said, looking directly at me. “But I breastfed her.”I try to reorient myself walking each morning. The adults were loath to turn back to the apartment, basking in company long denied. The light is soft, it is beautiful here, there is a breeze.

So are we surprised when Sebastian, of all people, turns up as a rider on Abby’s trip? She is (more or less) perfect all along (or at least as close to perfect as any of us are). No real spoilers here, I hope, but one of the riders turns out to be a pregnant teenager and, because of post-Roe obstructions, it takes a village to help her realize her choices. That’s probably because where I live, all the riders whiz past scoldingly, as if every day is the Tour de France. Also, I don’t like the word “derailleur” (whatever it means) and I don’t need to hear about the chamois lining of anybody’s shorts.

Obviously, the line is not perfect, but I think that’s a very sensible line. And I don’t think that’s all about absorption capability. But I don’t think it’s fair to say that the Russians have done everything they can. fareed zakaria[LAUGHS] And by the way, I think that’s some key to understanding the alliance is a personal one. I think India, Israel, and Poland — usually, in the 70 percent-plus say they like — have a favorable view of America.

Julio Torres Thinks Most Comedy Is Too Easy

Mamadi Doumbouya for The New York Times Talk Julio Torres Thinks Most Comedy Is Too Easy“I think with me,” Julio Torres says, “it’s like I have some things that I want to show people that are incidentally funny. That’s if, as Torres suggests, comedy is even what he’s doing. I don’t think of comedians as always the most self-assured people. Torres with Cassandra Ciangherotti in “Los Espookys.” Pablo Arellano Spataro/HBOA lot of your comedy pivots on characters having an epiphany. But I feel it behooves me to learn more about the way things are made, the systems, the hierarchies, the business part of show business.
