WASHINGTON — At Nativity grade school, we grew up steeped in the lore — and gore — of martyrs. For their brave deeds and words, these men and women were stoned, crucified, beheaded, stripped of all their skin, shot with arrows and cooked alive on a red-hot griddle. So I’m a little surprised my siblings would somehow put Donald Trump in those martyrs’ sainted company. My sister and brother, disturbed by Trump’s constant chaos and slashing insults, saw their hopes for Ron DeSantis or Nikki Haley evaporate. I called my Republican sibs Friday to see if hearing the word “guilty” ring out 34 times in a New York courtroom had finally severed them from Trump; they are, after all, children of a police detective.

The new six-part mini-series “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live,” the latest installment in the sprawling “Walking Dead” universe, premieres Sunday on AMC and AMC+. It finds Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira reprising their longtime roles as Rick Grimes and Michonne, the weathered survivors of a postapocalyptic wasteland populated by flesh-devouring zombies. “The Ones Who Live” picks their story up where it left off in the original series, revealing what happened to the couple after they exited the show. But it also involves other characters, settings and organizations that have either appeared or been mentioned in “The Walking Dead” and its spinoffs, including the dystopian city the Civic Republic, its high-tech military the C.R.M., and the slippery villain Jadis, played by Pollyanna McIntosh. (For their part, Lincoln and Gurira have said that they didn’t keep up with the whole series either, so you’re in good company.)

Starting Friday, movie theaters will have a steady stream of jump scares, creepy monsters and gore — and that's great news for the box office. As Hollywood grapples with dual labor strikes that restrict promotions for big blockbuster features, horror films could be the perfect balm. With smaller-than-average production budgets, these films are also often very lucrative for studios and don't require massive box office receipts to be profitable. Already in 2023, the horror movie genre has generated more than $600 million in domestic ticket sales, representing around 10% of the total box office in the U.S. and Canada, according to data from Comscore. Top horror films this year include:"Today's audiences love the thrills and escapist nature of horror films and the consistently solid box office numbers have ensured that studios and filmmakers will continue to produce a plentiful number of these films and movie theaters now and well into the future," Dergarabedian said.

Those who are into Lego Star Wars are among the most popular. It was at an informal contest where Louis met Victor, a fellow Lego Star Wars fanatic. Soon they ranked among the most popular Lego Star Wars YouTubers in France, known for the size and scope of their MOCs. The two friends no longer fit with that satisfying click that comes from snapping together two Lego bricks. Though it must have taken a truck to haul away all of Louis' Lego, no neighbor reported seeing anything suspicious.
A Florida Democratic legislator told The Washington Post of the party's struggles in the state. A party operative told the paper that the GOP continues to organize in the state, while Democrats have "regressed." Bush carried Florida for the GOP, but in 1996 then-President Bill Clinton flipped the state into the Democratic column in his successful reelection bid. The GOP governor, last fall, won reelection in a 19-point landslide over his Democratic rival, former Gov. In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Democratic state Rep. Anna AskMen said that the party had to "go back to basics" and overhaul its door-knocking and get-out-the-vote operations.
Vanguard announced on Wednesday it's pulling out of an initiative to fight climate change. Biden previously proposed a plan to involve the financial sector in reaching net zero carbon emissions. As Insider previously reported, Biden last year released a report that focused on mitigating the financial risks climate change puts on people's retirements, pensions, savings, and more. However, Republicans have plans to increase oversight over Wall Street firms that are assessing climate change and prioritizing environmental, social and governance causes, known as ESG. Still, the world is making some progress toward fighting the financial risks of climate crisis.

Lily Katzman, an associate editor on our Special Projects team, gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the project. InsiderWhen we say climate heroes, the usual suspects — think Greta Thunberg and Al Gore — come to mind. That's where Insider's Climate Action 30 comes into play.
