Then, in late September, Hurricane Helene flooded the rental home she now shares with her husband and 10-month-old baby. The storm made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in the Siesta Key area of Florida, causing damage and flooding throughout Central Florida. According to Bankrate, the average annual homeowners insurance premium in Florida is $3,242 more than the national average. But traditional homeowners’ insurance doesn’t cover flood damage. Most of the water damage sustained from Helene would be covered by flood insurance, often provided by the National Flood Insurance Program, and backed by the government.

Bridgette Bello thought she’d taken proper precautions to protect against Florida’s notorious hurricanes, having purchased flood insurance as well as a separate hurricane-specific policy, in addition to her regular homeowners coverage. That’s because flooding caused much of the property damage — and most homeowners insurance policies do not cover any flood impact. Eva Marie Uzcategui / The Washington Post - Getty ImThe insurance industry is categorizing Hurricane Helene as an almost entirely flood-driven event. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), the government-backed plan covering 95% of flood insurance policyholders in America, only covers losses up to 50% of what it deems a property to be worth — not including the land that the property sits on.

“We’re going to be going to the Congress. Going to need a lot more money as we identify specifically how much is needed. They're “the most potent greenhouse gases known to modern science,” as one research paper put it and they're growing fast. With the Environmental Protection Agency required to phase out one family of the chemicals 85% by 2036, the push is on to develop and spread cleaner alternatives. With more than 200 million gasoline cars in the U.S. alone, Groll said that amounts to approximately 100 million pounds of refrigerant leaking out into the atmosphere each year. The need to minimize refrigerant leaks has spurred a reuse and reclamation industry. ___Associated Press climate and environmental coverage receives support from several private foundations.

"While it appears to be a hot number on the actual number of people employed, the wage rate is not increasing as fast," said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer at Bokeh Capital Partners in Pittsburgh. The data brought relief to investors who mostly expect the Fed to pause hiking rates at its policy meeting on June 13-14. But some pointed to the much hotter-than-expected jobs data as a sign the Fed still has not yet tamed inflation. All 11 S&P 500 sectors advanced, with the materials index (.SPLRCM) leading, up 3.4%, and the consumer discretionary sector (.SPLRCD), housing Amazon, close behind, rising 2.2%. The S&P 500 posted 15 new 52-week highs and two new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 74 new highs and 40 new lows.

YOU SPEND ALL summer honing the can’t-see-it-coming slice, the killer backhand. Then winter hits and, poof, it seems tennis is over until it’s safe to leave home again without an anorak. Consider these resorts, which entice racket-enraptured guests with everything from weekend clinics and make-your-own tournaments to private lessons and ball machines. Many have added pickleball to their lineups, too, a nod to the fast-growing sport. At Little Dix Bay in Virgin Gorda, simply give your butler a ring to arrange for time on the court or elsewhere.
Airlines’ service cuts that ramped up this summer show no sign of relenting this holiday season, leaving more travelers likely to pay higher fares for fuller planes at crowded airports. And while dozens of small cities receive federal subsidies to support air travel through the long-running Essential Air Service program, Malarkey Black said even 29 of those communities are facing potential cutbacks due to pilot shortages. For the regional flights that do remain, “fares are up markedly as a result of service cuts,” said Scott Keyes, the founder of Scott’s Cheap Flights. Major U.S. carriers have cited pilot shortages for their cuts at regional airports, with some of them saying the labor crunch would take years to resolve. “Commercial air service is an expected amenity to both businesses and residents alike,” Grover said, promising to work “relentlessly, tenaciously” to restore it.
