Google struck a $2.7 billion deal with Character.ai., largley to rehire AI expert Noam Shazeer, WSJ reported. It's an eye-popping example of how expensive and in demand top AI talent is as competition heats up. AI career experts told Business Insider it's a bit like pro sports — the superstars are worth it. AdvertisementThere are plenty of stories out there about just how ruthless the hiring wars for AI talent have gotten. Grennan predicted this pattern will continue as the AI talent window stays hot for the next three to four years.

Amazon abandoned its $1.7 billion purchase of iRobot in January after the FTC and European regulators raised concerns. Since peaking at $1.5 trillion in 2021, tech transaction volume has plummeted, dropping to $544 billion last year, according to Dealogic. Before the company announced its $27 billion purchase of data analytics software company Splunk last September, he said he viewed the risk as absolutely worth taking. Alphabet's last big deal was its $5.4 billion purchase of cybersecurity company Mandiant in 2022. Microsoft closed its massive $75 billion purchase of Activision in October, but it took 20 months and a protracted fight with U.S. and European regulators.

AdvertisementThe antitrust trial, which began on Monday and is expected to last another month, has been configured as a bench trial. The case is different from a different Google antitrust trial decided earlier this year, where a judge found the company illegally monopolized the search market. AdvertisementThe Justice Department brought five different counts against Google under the Sherman Act, the landmark 1890 law that allows for the Justice Department to break up monopolies. AdvertisementAccording to a couple of professors who the Justice Department hired to do the math, that all added up to $2,289,751. The deck was obtained by adtech veteran Ari Paparo, CEO of Marketecture Media, which is producing "The Monopoly Report" newsletter to accompany Google's adtech trial. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Business Insider could not confirm with certainty whether this was a final draft. The DOJ and the states are seeking a breakup of Google's adtech business, which could have big ramifications on the broader digital ad market. The case concerns the under-the-hood part of Google's advertising business: The technology that connects advertisers with publishers and that runs the advertising auctions that take place in the milliseconds it takes a webpage to load.

Apple said on Monday that the artificial intelligence models underpinning Apple Intelligence, its AI system, were pretrained on processors designed by Google, a sign that Big Tech companies are looking for alternatives to Nvidia when it comes to the training of cutting-edge AI. Apple's choice of Google's homegrown Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for training was detailed in a technical paper just published by the company. Separately, Apple released a preview version of Apple Intelligence for some devices on Monday. Apple doesn't name Google or Nvidia in its 47-page paper, but did note its Apple Foundation Model (AFM) and AFM server are trained on "Cloud TPU clusters." "This system allows us to train the AFM models efficiently and scalably, including AFM-on-device, AFM-server, and larger models," Apple said in the paper.

The U.S. internet giant said late Monday it is reversing a long-planned move to ditch third-party cookies — the critical text files that track users' web activity for advertisers. And what does Google's decision mean for how you interact with the web moving forward — or, for that matter the advertising industry? Roughly 40.9% of websites globally use cookies to gather data on users, according to data from W3Techs, a web technology research firm. This issue forms the main reason why Google has now decided to terminate its planned depreciation of third-party cookies.

Google's CEO said "We got it wrong" in response to Gemini's AI debacle. Google has temporarily disabled Gemini's ability to generate images of people. AdvertisementGoogle's CEO reflected in a new interview on the company's Gemini AI image-generation debacle earlier this year, a controversy that drew backlash. Google CEO Sundar Pichai told Bloomberg in an interview published Wednesday that "we got it wrong" and it was a case in which good intentions went awry. Following criticism of the issue, Google paused Gemini from generating AI images of people while it corrected the changes.

AdvertisementThe upshot: For now, Google is testing out self-generated "AI overviews" for some regular search queries where it thinks the answer might be complex (but answerable). A Google rep told me the AI answers have been deployed in a "very limited percentage of search traffic" in the US and the UK. Screenshot/GoogleBecause I am A Responsible Journalist, I also asked Google how Google Magi, which powers these results, does or doesn't interact with the tech powering Google Gemini, its much-maligned "woke AI" chatbot. The move shows the transfer window of AI expertise is firmly open as Big Tech companies battle it out to lure top AI talent. About 10 Google employees from its office in Seoul have accepted the company's suggestion to resign, the report said. Around 100 Google workers in Korea formed a union last year due to mounting concerns over the industry-wide layoffs in the US. "With the ongoing job cuts within the US tech industry, employees have been concerned about their job security and decided to establish a union," Kim Jong-sub, head of the Google Korea union, told Korea Herald last April. Google laid off 12,000 employees in 2023 — about 6% of its headcount — and it's continuing to make job cuts this year. A total of 262,595 employees were laid off from 1,186 tech companies in 2023, Layoffs.fyi, which tracks job cuts, showed.

If the world's leading AI researchers use Llama, Meta could have an easier time hiring skilled technologists who understand the company's approach to development. Although a number of open source LLMs are available, Lambert said Llama 2 is by far the most popular. Prosecutors say Sam Bankman-Fried is trying to discredit Caroline Ellison by leaking her diary entries. Bankman-Fried wants to make her look like a "jilted lover," prosecutors wrote in a court filing. Prosecutors say Bankman-Fried gave "a misleading patina of legitimacy" to an effort to discredit Ellison in the case. "The fact that the defendant funneled this material through the New York Times, rather than directly commenting on the documents himself, is particularly pernicious," prosecutors wrote. The material risked tainting the jury pool and could deter other potential witnesses from testifying at the trial, prosecutors wrote.

Google is cutting jobs at its Waze mapping service as it merges the unit with its own map products. "We have decided to transition Waze's ads monetization to be managed by the Global Business Organization (GBO), similar to Google Maps," Phillips wrote. Google is introducing generative AI to its adtech products as it races against Amazon and Microsoft. Revenues from generative AI software will surge to $81 billion by 2027, per a TD Cowen report. The value of generative AI software is primed to explode, and a recent TD Cowen report projected that generative AI software revenues will surge to $81 billion by 2027, from under $1 billion in 2022. Google's generative AI can automatically create image variants GoogleGoogle had previously said at its I/O conference that there would be new search formats from generative AI. Dischler said the move to bring generative AI, which automatically creates content, to Google's ad products was the natural next step of Google's AI evolution.
Top of mind for employees was AI, including the company's recent showcase of generative AI products at its I/O developer conference on May 10. But staffers have concerns about the impacts of Google's aggressive push to build generative AI into all of its products. These OKRs were written to "rally" teams to incorporate AI into Google's products, Pichai said. 'People don't want to just hear AI-generated content'Another submitted question read: "LLMs are inundating the internet with AI-generated content, such as websites, books, images, music, and videos. This AI-generated content may eventually lead to a decline in internet quality, which may directly affect the quality of Google's search results.
