A former software engineer at Google has been charged with stealing artificial intelligence technology from the company while secretly working with two companies based in China, the Justice Department said Wednesday. "The theft of innovative technology and trade secrets from American companies can cost jobs and have devastating economic and national security consequences." Within weeks of the theft starting, prosecutors say, Ding was offered the position of chief technology officer at an early-stage technology company in China that touted its use of AI technology. The indictment says Ding traveled to China and participated in investor meetings at the company and sought to raise capital for it. When a Google employee asked the company if he could organize his work schedule to work fewer hours on more days, a human resources representative responded saying the average Google employee works more than a normal 9-to-5 work day — seeming to refute earlier reports that Googlers have light workloads. The memo also said the company allows employees to apply for schedules that are 60% or 80% of full-time. The HR representative's confirmation that employees typically work long hours made some workers eager to share that information with their friends and relatives, according to internal message boards. Those one-hour workday reports went viral — including with Google employees' friends and family. US PIRG is suggesting Google extend software support for Chromebooks to make them last longer. Chromebooks, the budget laptops running Google software, are creating a lot of e-waste, according to a report from the US Public Interest Research Group (US PIRG) Education Fund. The report also points to how finding replacement parts for Chromebooks from different manufacturers, like HP, can make repairs more difficult. "Moving forward, these companies should design Chromebooks to last by improving device durability, repairability and sustainability," the US PIRG report says. Gutterman told Insider that, "we just can't afford to keep churning out technology at this rate, whether it's Chromebooks or laptops or phones."
An Ex-Googler described being laid off 16 years after he started as an intern. "Google has been my one and only career," Joel Leitch wrote in a LinkedIn post. The things that I will miss most are the people and the relationships built," Leitch wrote in the post. Leitch and Google didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider, made outside normal working hours. Leitch isn't alone in taking to LinkedIn after losing his job in the layoffs that have swept the tech industry.

At first, Jeremy Joslin thought the email announcing his layoff was a phishing attempt. It was 5:30 a.m. in California when he saw it, and with so many technology job cuts afoot, the Google software engineer thought a scammer was trying to capitalize on the news. The message, sent to his personal inbox, directed him to a website for newly laid-off Google employees and told him to set up an account. He went to check his work email and found he was locked out. The news was real: Mr. Joslin, a 20-year company veteran, had been laid off with a template email, one of roughly 12,000 workers Google’s parent, Alphabet , said this month it was letting go.
Meta, Salesforce, Twitter, Snap and other tech companies have also announced layoffs in recent months. Others are using their platforms to raise awareness of labor rights in wake of recent layoffs.
